1/2 Why is Oliver an INTJ? Where is Ni dom? After some reflections on cognitive functions (for which I really thank Stalkyoo, who opened to me an unknown world) I think I'm able to expose my personal opinion, point by point. Dominant: Ni. This aspect is difficult to understand and see, because O. seems extremely anchored to reality: he is cynical, pragmatic, rationalist. But all this is due to the secondary/auxiliary function Te: I read that in introverted types the second function appears more evident than the first. Looking carefully, I think that this character relates to the world more through intuition than through direct sensorial experience of things. He knows material reality very well, but he doesn’t need to grap on personally sense for understand it. I say this because there are countless scenes in which O. perceives the situation around him without the need for particular sensory aids or previous personal experiences: most of the time, he seems to be the only one present who is aware of what is going on. And he senses what the other characters (pretty different from him) are feeling, sometimes even before themselves. A look, a reasoning, a quick conclusion which follows equally quick analogies and comparison. He doesn't need personal past experiences of things: he gets there with intuition and imagination, starting from the single peculiarity of the different cases and put them together in a general idea. He observes, analyzes... and already knows how things will probably end. Oliver is Ni even when he rebels against traditions and conformism, looking for deeper lyrics for his songs and running away from home from his oppressive stepfather, in search of independence. Willpower and being absorbed in his own thoughts are also common in Ni, searching for better things. Then it is also true that O has a good memory, which seems to be attributable more to Si than to Ni, but in general I think that his life is based more on a collection of present observations and comparisons than on a past direct sensorial archive (even his mother's love life is something in his present, which he observe but does not depend on him). O. never shows a particular interest in having direct experience of things in order to know them. Instead, most of the time he reworks and groups together things that he sees and does not see, building a general and (often correct) idea of what surrounds him. In any case, memory aside, I don't see any other similarities with what I read on Si: attachment to tradition and conservatism, search for material experiences and pleasure, sense of duty (but not moral, which is Fi), dependence on what it was done. Auxiliary: Te (Extroverted Thinking). This is the most evident function in Oliver and also the one that creates confusion, making him look like a earthly, material, sensorial and “down to earth” character. There's no need to explain it: O. is rational, efficient, pragmatic, cynical. Always aware... and armed with a frankness that ignore other people's emotions. Much of the pessimism and distrust towards feelings originates from here... and also much of the knowledge of reality: it’s Te (and not Si) which orders data, facts, information, statistics and memories acquired through Ni, and schematizes them logically. Nothing’s left to chance: everything is examined in its being and in the consequences it brings. Te fulfills its auxiliary function as "good parent", containing Ni's impulsive and massive impressions with the aim of protecting him. But sometimes it can be an oppressive and suffocating parent, which takes its job too seriously, and takes over everything. And so a good part of the dreams, impressions, inspirations and hopes generated by Ni's intuition collide and remain caged in the inexorable objectivity of Te, which absorbs all possible real data and leaves no room for any illusion: Te organizes, schematizes, plans and orders clearly. It's a self-defense mechanism. But on the other hand it also brings an element of curiosity: O. demonstrates several times that he is curious and open about those unknown things that interest him. He is not closed-minded, despite being logical and realistic.
