Alison is an example of Fe gone wrong: - Fe: ”We’ll be friends forever… Can you put mine on for me, Em?” Alison’s use of Fe is the most prominent part of her personality. Alison is a person that displays great charisma and ability to easily change the emotional atmosphere. She knows what to say or do to make a person feel better. She gives only Emily a present and says: “you’re the only one that really understands me, Em.” Alison easily picks up that Emily likes her and so she creates moments between the two of them that stir up positive emotionality (Fe) in Emily. Or when Alison walks in on Hana throwing away cookies: Alison walks up to Hana and knows how to give a very sympathetic look. She simply says “I understand” and hugs Hana in order to quell her feelings of shame and fear about her weight struggle. Of course, she only makes the girls feel better so she can better manipulate them. As Alison promptly introduces Hana to purging right afterwards. Alison also knows how to rile up emotions. For example, while dressing up with friends, she runs to the window saying “I can see you!” and claims that Tobey was spying on them changing. She applies emotional pressure through anger in order to get the other girls to think badly of Tobey. She puts him down through words and dramatizes the situation. And thus the girls go along with her sabotaging his house. She knows exactly what to say to bring down a person’s emotions: “Dammit Hana, don’t make me sorry I ever included you in the first place… you better keep your mouth shut unless you want to go back to spending your weekends alone: DDR and a jumbo bag of chips.” She knows what buttons to push on people to get them to make them feel a certain way. In return, she can get them to do her bidding. This is her preferred way of working the world. Fi-ignoring: She also shows good Fi but unvalued. Always telling the other girls what is the “right” thing to do relationship-wise. “You gotta tell your mom that your dad’s cheating. You gotta tell your sister about you and her boyfriend.” She likely does not genuinely care, but wants to create a sense of urgency in her friends in order to manipulate them. Instead of focusing on internal sentiment, Alison focuses on the external emotions of things, ‘Oh no this is terrible! This is bad! You/We have to do THIS now.’ She prefers to exert emotional pressure in her speaking, lacking regard for Fi: “You are nothing without me. I MADE you, Spencer.” Alison wants to create a feeling of fear and inadequacy in Spencer, not caring how it may damage their relationship. For Alison: as long as Spencer feels fear towards Alison, Alison can still manipulate her. Fe > Fi. - Ni-Se: “The only way to do that is to die young. Leave a beautiful corpse… Haven’t you guys ever thought about how deliciously tragic it’ll be to die in some incredibly mysterious way? That would be superior… It’s not gruesome. It’s immortality, my darlings.” Alison is capable of thinking about the ways things develop over time. And has clear visions of how she would like things to go. Her Si-polr shows in how Alison doesn’t care about comfort, like wanting to die young in order to be forever beautiful. “It’s immortality.” She sees things more in the long-term and disregards the short-term. Her use of force (Se) is valued, but not as strong as Ni. And her use of Se seems to need support. Instead of taking action to bomb Tobey herself, she needed to manipulate the other girls to come along with her. I used to think she was Se-dom. However, her Se is not prevalent enough, and I see now that she reeks of Fe. - Ti-suggestive: “What? I did it for Aria. I only kill when we need food. Or when I’m bored.” Alison shows a value for Ti, by wanting her actions to make sense. She wants to bomb Tobey, saying he’s a creep and deserves it. And rationalized it by saying “It’s a stink bomb for god’s sake. We’re not nuking the place.” Her use of Ti is simple and not very nuanced. Instead she relies on building simple ideological statements, such as “Friends share secrets. That’s what keeps us close” to set a unified way of thinking among her friend group.
