ISFJ: Matthew is down to earth and sees no need to deviate his behavior from what it has always been: traditional, rooted in the things that last (family, work, and farming) with an emphasis on hard work. Even when others caution him to take time off as he gets older, he refuses, instead finding enjoyment in continuing to farm the land. He’s attentive to his environment, and notices things about other people… like the fact that Anne doesn’t dress like the other girls. Though incredibly shy and a man of few words, Matthew on occasion sticks up for Anne’s rights and flat-out contradicts Marilla on how to raise her. His moods shift to reflect Anne, and he likes having her around because she brings happiness into the house. He’s very considerate in trying to make her happy, and choose things to buy for her that she will like. From the moment he meets her, he feels a strong desire to protect and love her… but defers for a short time to Marilla’s severe influence. Whenever Anne is in turmoil, he tries to reconcile between her and other people, and encourages her to “smooth things over.” He’s an intensely introspective man, prone to intense periods of internal thought. He rarely shares what he’s going to do with anyone else before he does it (Anne knows he’s going for the doctor). He tries to come up with logical reasons to keep Anne, and ways that they might hire local boys to help out with the farming. While he’s not imaginative, he delights in Anne’s imagination and encourages her to continue to dream. He goes out of his way to foster an environment for her in that respect, even if it’s as simple a thing as buying a dress with puffed sleeves. His fear of the possibilities of the future, in the books, with the bank collapse is what causes his fatal heart attack. 9w1: Matthew is a sharp contrast to his sister; he is amenable, quiet, even-tempered, and doesn’t often “stick his oar in,” as Marilla would say. He appeals to Anne to smooth things over with Marilla so that she can stay, since he finds it hard to assert himself with his sister and insist upon her keeping Anne (she considers Anne a liar, and finds it hard to forgive her). He’s even afraid to speak up and ask for a dress for Anne at the store, instead taking a rambling roundabout approach and winding up buying way more than he needs and taking home 30 pounds of brown sugar to his sister in the process. His 1 wing is principled, proper, and understands why his sister is such a stickler for the rules, even though Matthew doesn’t really care for them in the name of peace (he thinks it’s fine to tell a decent story and pretend to be apologetic, even if Anne isn’t, provided it brings peace back into the house).
