"Quel type de personnalité est Sherlock Holmes? Sherlock Holmes est un type de personnalité ENTP dans MBTI, 7w8 - sp/sx - 748 dans Enneagram, SCUEI dans Big 5, ILE dans Socionics."
For the sake of argument (the INTP vs ISTP debate) I just kinda accepted Sherlock would be a Ti dom. My first impression was more that of an ENTP as he’s very outgoing and socially competent. This doesn’t mean he can’t be a cognitive introvert, but I’ve gathered enough evidence to convince myself that he is in fact an ENTP. I’ve been reading over and over in the comments how this Sherlock is clearly Se-Ni over Ne-Si, but I don’t see any compelling arguments for it. Se-Ni means to gathers facts and organizes patterns to arrive at a singular abstract connection. Ne-Si means to gathers ideas then cross-check them with known facts. I find the use of his perceiving functions most apparent during the murder case on the train, and I never arrive at an obvious conclusion for either side. I think the anime did a poor job conveying this process, which might be part of the reason people see him as ISTP. If his perceiving functions aren’t balanced in the middle of his stack to begin with, but are his outer functions, this might explain why the debate here has stagnated. What I do remember is that Sherlock focuses in more on details and draws conclusions from there, so if any I’m more willing to accept Si due to his very deliberate use of sensory input. You don’t need to be a cognitive extrovert to be outgoing, but I find it hard to explain Sherlock’s temperament otherwise. Especially if you believe he’s an ISTP with focus on Ni to explain his effortless use of intuition. Primarily using Ti-Ni would mean a lot of introspective and we just don’t see Sherlock being curled up in his own mind that much. Also, his Fe is way too strong to be inferior. Using the objective typing method makes this especially clear. Is Sherly balanced with control vs. chaos or self vs. tribe? I’d argue he’s balanced with self vs. tribe. While we do get hints at OG Sherlocks desire to be alone, he has a solid standing in society as a detective and with his acquaintances. He’s a very social person and effortlessly interacts with strangers. The control vs. chaos side seems more unbalanced, we see this with his tendency to jump into action first and thinking later, producing literal chaos when he blows up his flat or grip stress whenever he tries to organize his thoughts. Consequently, this Sherlock has an ExxP temperament. With extroverted perceiving first I find it very believable he’s a Ne dom. It’s already hard to explain his excellent use of intuition in the ISTP stack, and even more so as an inferior function now that we’re left with ESTP if you want to retain the Se-Ni axis. But as a Ne dom his intuition is placed in the slot that allows for the most effortless use. Another argument against Se is how he tends to be sulking over his lack of cases to solve, instead of going out onto the streets and searching for the next one. We get Si inferior as a result. Organizing things isn’t Sherly’s strength at all and we occasionally see what might be Si grip. More obvious in the manga, he gets stuck on the crime lord case, reanalyzing his data and thinking it to death, without arriving at any conclusion. If he had Ni, he’d be more inclined to look forward, but instead he gets stuck. Sherly distracts himself with various activities such as playing the violin, smoking, and running around in his room nervously. He even shoots at a ghost of his imagination. ENTP in grip stress can become obsessed with factual accuracy. This prevents Sherlock to find the actual truth. In these moments he doesn’t trust his Ne anymore to draw accurate connections. He considers the wrong information, and his Si focuses in on past mistakes. In this case Sherlock regrets not taking his chance for a kill. This behavior could also be explained by a Ti-Si loop, but Sherly otherwise doesn’t experience looping behavior and is quick to switch back to Ne mode. Temporary periods of Si grip explains it better. Now his Fe is quite strong as well. Like many tert Fe users, Sherlock has this certain type of confidence and charisma. He displays lots of playfulness and social competence and even modesty if needed. A certain scene made this obvious to me, when he jumps into the Thames to save an actress and gives her his jacket, leaving him freezing and bare-chested. We see again and again how Sherly puts the needs of others over his own and perusing cases that offer little for himself. Finally, I want to address the connection to his enneagram. We mostly agree on the 7 and while it’s easy to attribute many characteristics that make this Sherlock an extrovert to enneagram 7, IxTP with enneagram 7 is quite rare. ENTP with enneagram 7 on the other hand is perfectly plausible. While a given MBTI type doesn’t exactly exclude certain enneagram types, a given cognitive stack implies certain enneagrams. In other words, you might find this Sherlock be more likely to be an ISTP or INTP, but out of the options ISTP 7w8, INTP 7w8, and ENTP 7w8, the last one is by far the most likely.
