The definitions I use for good and evil is that Good means someone willing to make sacrifices for others and not only having good intentions but also doing actions that are done to help others. Good people are compassionate. A tough hard-nosed person can be cold but still good if they acknowledge when to not be aggressive and show kindness when necessary. And they do good things despite being rough around the edges personality-wise. A violent or lying person who breaks the law can also still be considered good as long as they do it for the right reasons. For example, stepping in to fight when they see someone getting bullied, or randomly breaking into people's houses to leave gifts in their home with positive messages behind. (They call these kinds of people Chaotic Good) Now an evil person is someone I believe who is selfish in the sense that they look out for themselves first and not care about anyone else's welfare. If given the opportunity to choose between a million dollars or a group of people's lives, they'd take the money. Now having a desire for power and money isn't inherently evil. A good person might desire money and power because they want to use it to better their community. An EVIL person desires power and money because they just like the idea of telling people what to do and getting away with more things since they have control over people (An example of Lawful Evil). They want money for themselves and have no desire to donate to charity and have no qualms stepping on other people to get more of it. Manipulating others to get something out of them or to harm others out of malice is also an evil trait. And evil isn't limited to malicious violence, either. It can also be something like depriving their employees of a livable wage, telling or gaslighting someone into thinking they're worthless and unloved, throwing someone's entire collection away knowing how much time and effort they took collecting it, stealing for personal benefit is another example. On the flip side, good isn't limited to donating to charity or community service. It's giving a friend a blanket when they say they're cold, grabbing on to someone who's about to fall off a ledge, participating or organizing a civil rights movement, giving to others without expecting anything in return, lending a listening ear to someone going through a tough time, etc.

Characters who are clearly evil, but nevertheless organised, consistent, rule-abiding, or maybe even trustworthy and reasonable in their own limited way — in other words, Lawful Evil. A Lawful Evil character is an evil character who either tries to impose or uphold a lawful system on others without regard for their wishes, and/or adheres to a particular code. They believe in order, but mostly because they believe it is the best way of realizing their evil wishes. They will obey the letter of the law, but not the spirit, and are usually very careful about giving their word. However, there is also the Knight Templar variant, who believes their rules actually make them the good guy — when they and their rules have in truth ended up at the lower end of the slippery slope to evil and tyranny. Lawful Evil tends to be the hardest type of evil to get rid of, especially when it's working within an established system.
