CW: this analysis gets hands-on with the more disturbing aspects of Equius as a character. Read at your own risk. We appear to largely be in agreement here but let me break down WHY Equius is an ISTJ (he fascinates me to no end and i'm about to make it everyone's problem): 1) Equius demonstrates his Dom Si in his incredibly rigid and prejudiced way of thinking- Befitting of Te judgement he appears to see things very categorically, but his thoughts present in a black-and-white manner; you are either STRONG or WEAK, DOMINANT or SUBJUGATED, HONORABLE or DISGRACEFUL, and others are either ABOVE HIM or BENEATH HIM. This is especially used in fleshing out his interactions with Gamzee and Aradia, who are of the highest and lowest land-dwelling castes respectively. He also takes great pleasure in sensory indulgences (not just milk and sweat, but the Act of milking and sweating too), prioritizing them above anything and anyone else, including his own life. He can often be found describing said enjoyment in such visceral detail, that it has a knock-on effect of being actively repulsive to others... Case in point being his conversation with Dave, who fails to counter-troll him and *only* him. He unfortunately also takes this trait with him when his remains are prototyped with Lil Hal to create ARquiussprite, much to the dismay of Dirk. 2) Clearly Te > Ti. This guy is the main vehicle that the plot uses for exposition wrt the prejudices of the Hemocaste system in Hivebent, so it only makes sense that he looks to the external world around him for guidance on how to think and then projects that framework back out to his surroundings instead of questioning it for himself- This guy is NOT Ti. It also bears mentioning that he has controlling tendencies, which were SO pronounced prior to his formal introduction that it doesn't take Hussie's commentary¹ to pick up on the subtext of domestic abuse (e.g. the glimpse of Author with a black eye, Equius' deeply patriarchal worldview, Nepeta's naive yet hesitant appeasement behavior) that set up the ultimate punchline of his character... that of course, being that he is later strangled to death by his prospective ex-kismesis in a disturbing microcosm of IPV-turned-homicide; it's in fact the most statistically likely means by which it happens, which just circles the gruesome debaucle right back around to being Te theming. On a lighter note, though. 3) Tertiary Fi, clearly underdeveloped. I will first note that this would give him blind spot Fe, which fits him so well it almost hurts- He exudes a negative aura of social harmony, despite his unwavering insistence on conformity with societal norms. Speaking of which: He holds himself to an extremely high standard of what he Ought to be like, and rarely if ever deviates from it. Nepeta insists that he isn't Actually the strict and authoritative Tough Guy™️ he tries to come off as, much to his chagrin... But nonetheless, she's right; He's JUST AS MUCH of a scared and maladjusted autistic 13 year old as anyone else on B1's blue team, if not even moreso. He does at least show a *little* Fi development (e.g roleplaying with Nepeta, building Tavros a new pair of legs out of altruism) before he sends himself off to confront Gamzee, but it's unfortunately not enough to save him... or anyone else, for the matter. 4) Like his Bowkind specibus, he is never seen wielding his inferior Ne to its full potential and in fact, has it effectively used *against* him more often. His only demonstration of the Extroverted Intuition function is while he's in its grip; he is flummoxed by the competing facts of Aradia's merit, her blood color, and his feelings for her, and he expresses frustration while trying and failing to resolve these factors with his first 3 functions. Eventually, he *does* come up with a solution he finds satisfactory (Aradiabot's body, which pumps blue blood and is programmed to be infatuated with him), but crucially- the solution is only satisfactory to *him,* being made without a single thought towards what *she* might think of it, and he is subsequently blindsided with when she loses her shit immediately after incorporating herself into it. It is this inability to consider new possibilities that eventually leads him to ruin, as he had a variety of opportunities to deconstruct, or at least set aside his casteist beliefs surrounding righteous subjugation over the course of his SGRUB session... And he took none of them. 5) To end this analysis, i would like to encourage the reader to take a peek under the hood and look into the ISTJ's shadow functions² if you're at all interested- The descriptions ring very true of Equius and does a lot of heavy lifting in explaining What His Fucking Problem is, if what i've written so far hasn't already painted it in sufficiently vivid detail for you. He is *such* a freak. I am putting him in my mind's centrifuge like he's a bacterial sample and spinning him at mach 1.
