It doesn’t make any sense.” I think these two quotes really encapsulate Ryan’s character as a whole, and I hope to be able to not only do him justice in this analysis, but also help others understand who he is at the very core of his person. One thing about Se Doms is their ability to take in their environment so effortlessly and immediately access the situation. When I think of the Se-Ti axis (ESTPs and ISTPs) I think of a very grounded, non pretentious person very present in reality. They consist of a constant ‘observing and deducing’ mindset. They take in sensory information and analyze it through the filter of Ti. I think where ESFP comes from is people mistaking introverted thinking for intuition, when it actually comes from the almost ‘brute force’ analysis of huge amounts of data. Stacy Clausen, the actor of Ryan, has stated before in an interview that Ryan originally took Naim to the field to basically give the new kid a “little scare” by showing him the snake. I think Ryan took a bit of an interest in Naim and wanted to help him defend himself against some of the meaner kids and show how he’s an ‘ally’ to him. However, he cant explicitly say that cause that wouldn’t look “masculine”, so instead Ryan teases Naim through action, reaction, and analysis. ESTPs enjoy reactive environments and situations. This is kinda where the stereotype of ESTPs being sports people come from. It’s less about an inherent greatness for physical aptitude (which any type could develop) and more their desire to react and adapt in the moment. They want to make a decision and see an immediate impact. This is opposed to Ni doms, who tend to plan things months or years into the future; Se’s want to see an immediate impact. Long term plans require one to be repetitive and systematic at times, which is (for lack of a better term) really boring. And even worse, you have to actively ignore every other opportunity you’ll be seeing on route to the goal. So to solve this “problem”, they put themselves in situations where they have to make quick and reflexive decisions. Or the tl;dr, Anything that requires analysis and action is very attractive for an ESTP. I think this is why Ryan took Naim to the field and the warehouse. He wanted to see if Naim would be scared or squeamish upon seeing the snake eating the frog, and teased him the first time they hung out to see how much Naim could take before he throws punches back. Ryan realized that despite his prior thoughts of the quiet new kid, Naim was fun. He liked teasing him and seeing his reactions, as well as being able to let his guard down around him (something he can’t do around his school friends). So basically, he took Naim to this environment he knows his way around and is comfortable in (and knows Naim isn’t familiar with) so he can analyze and react to Naim’s reactions very quickly and see an immediate impact to these actions. One thing about types with a third slot Fe (Entp’s and Estp’s) is that they have a sort of “roguish” charm to them—seducing and offending in equal measure. But with both of these types, even though they hide it sometimes or manifest it in a warped way, they do care a lot—especially in things like fairness and justice. Third slot Fe gives them a level of empathy and want for harmony, but it also makes them very good at knowing what people want and are motivated by. This can make them know and give a person what they want, or intentionally not give it; or manipulate. They can visualize win-win situations quite easily. But if they can’t get win-win, they’ll get win-lose, with them coming out on top. I think a small yet significant instance of this was when he immediately #clocked that Naim wanted him as deeply as Ryan wanted him after playfully fighting and immediate acting on it by making a quick deduction that acting on his feelings, even if he was rejected, would most likely be favorable to him (I.e. Naim would either kiss him back and they’ll share in this secret together, or he’ll avoid him. No one at school would believe him if he told them Ryan was gay and kissed him since he has no one to corroborate the story). This might be reading into things a bit too much, but overall I think Ryan tries to prioritize his survival by hanging around the ‘right’ people, and Naim is the exception or “weakness” to these walls he’s built up. So I think the kiss must’ve been a calculated decision of sorts. (1/2)
