(Part 1/2) I think Killian is an E8. Although his love of a “pirate’s life” may seem indicative of the passion of gluttony, Killian didn’t become a pirate because of an insatiable thirst for new stimulation/wanting to escape boredom or pain. He chose to become a pirate as a way of getting revenge against a corrupt king who he blamed for the death of his brother. It was ultimately a way of seeking justice: “Our kingdom is corrupt and immoral. They took my brother from me, and now I’m going to take everything they’ve got, starting with this ship!” “When they come for us, I want them to know exactly what we are. Pirates! For at least among thieves, there is honor!” Whenever he talks about the joys of a pirate’s life, he doesn’t emphasize having a variety of fun experiences and instead talks about the power his lifestyle gives him/his rebellion against the monarchy: “We sail where we will and >answer to no crown.<” “My conquests, I’m >justly proud< of. Each town that I plunder I leave torn asunder. A pirate’s life is one to love.” 7s are always planning for new, fun things to do in order to flee from pain. They have an intolerance to negativity and frustration and they usually try to focus on the positive aspects of things. Killian, by contrast, is rarely one to put a positive spin on a negative situation (“I hate to be the one to offer optimism.”) and the only thing we ever really see him plan for is revenge. For instance, when Killian finds a way to go to Neverland, he’s uninterested in the endless excitement that Neverland offers and only wants to travel there to find something that could enable him to get revenge on Rumple: “What if I was to tell you that I was about to set sail to a land where none of us will ever grow old? Where I can discover how to get my revenge on Rumplestiltskin.” Although he doesn’t seem to have the E7’s fixation on planning, his behavior fits the description of the E8’s fixation on vengeance perfectly. Throughout the series, Killian repeatedly acts from his own sense of justice and exacts vengeance on people he deems deserving of it, such as when he steals Ursula’s voice in order to punish her father: “I don’t have to kill you to make you suffer. I know I’m not the only one consumed by vengeance! Now you’ll never sink another ship with this.” Or when he wanted to kill Blackbeard for stealing his ship: “Now if the coward who tried stealing her from me would kindly show his face, I’ll give him the punishment he deserves.” Or when he made Rumple believe he was kidnapping his wife and taunted him for being too afraid to fight for her: “A man unwilling to fight for what he wants deserves what he gets.” Or when he spent over a century trying to find a way to punish Rumple for killing Milah: “He tore her heart out and crushed it in front of me, and I’ve spent every moment since then wanting revenge!” “I spent over a century trying to find a way to kill the bloody crocodile.” In the musical episode, Killian’s song was even called, “Revenge is Gonna Be Mine.” The lyrics of the song highlight how Killian is primarily focused on rebalancing wrongs, further showing that he isn’t driven by the passion of gluttony: “Your riches would fill other pirates with glee, but none of those pirates are me.” “That croc got my hand. I wanna tear out his spine!” “Cause even more precious than rum in a stein is revenge, revenge, revenge, and it’s gonna be mine.” Killian also exhibits denial, the E8’s defense mechanism. He’s always trying to deny his vulnerability and to keep anyone from seeing that he genuinely cares about other people, such as when he and Ariel team up in season 3. When Ariel says that she’d heard tales of his heroism in Neverland, he pulls her aside to make sure no one would hear her and tells her not to believe those stories, that he’s a pirate and always will be. When Blackbeard realizes that Killian actually wants to help Ariel, he mocks him in front of the other pirates (“They were right about you, Hook. You have gone soft!”) and Killian is so unsettled by this that he chooses to betray Ariel in order to avoid looking weak. As Killian begins to change for the better and reflects on his mistakes, he recognizes that his greatest struggle was his obsession with vengeance: “You only gave in to the darkness out of love. I plunged in headfirst in a second for revenge. I was weak!” His story is essentially a journey towards achieving the E8’s virtue of innocence/integration to 2, which is perhaps best exemplified by the story he tells Emma about how he’d stolen each of his rings from different men he’d killed: “You see this? Belonged to a man named Barnaby. He called me One Hand Jones. I killed him in front of his wife, took his ring. This one? Edgar. Fine sailor. I caught him drinking the captain’s wine. I drowned him.” He then tells her that he once wore his rings as trophies, proud reminders of those he’d punished for wronging him. (Continued below)
