Someone who believes everything that happens is destined to happen and there is no way to escape it. They probably spend a lot of time saying that You Can't Fight Fate and to Know When to Fold 'Em — in vain. And yes, the root here is referring to "fate", not "fatal" as in "death", but the word "fatal" is actually derived from "fate". It originally referred to anything caused by fate, which, of course, includes death, as any fatalist will tell you, so it works both ways.
