I believe I finally figured out why so many people here can't decide which type Astarion is ENTJ or ESFP. My initial vote was for ENTJ, and I still believe Astarion is that type, but it's not that simple, and I have a theory. We all know Astarion's backstory, a slave spawn turned into vampire and forced to be a prostitute by his sadistic master, who took pleasure in torturing him. There were also some subtle hints from the developers that Cazador wasn't just a sadist but also forced his spawns to have s*x with him. Astarion: "I could have lived eternally in Cazador's ➡️PLEASURE CHAMBERS⬅️. I'm not afraid to die. I'm afraid I'll never have a new life after that." So there is a tremendous amount of all kind of abuse, including supposed r*pe, that couldn't go unnoticed for the one's psyche, and there is a defence mechanism to it explained within MBTI. There is a thing called the loop of the dominant and tertiary functions. While the loop is active, auxilliary function is not functioning at all, or tries to function poorly, sometimes, but while the source of the stress is present it the person's life, the person will inevitably slip back into the loop. Each type has their own loop, for INTJ it's Ni-Fi, and it feels as ugly as described on the internet, I've expirienced it personally and even if it's a personal expirience, that helped me to see Astarion's behaviour throgh the possible loop of his functions. And in his case, his loop could be not only defensive mechanism, but the thing that saved him mentally. And I must mention the loop is not a short termed thing, the person can stay years and years in it. I believe vampire is no different. Back to the ENTJ and ESFP (i'm not taking any other possible names types into account here, based on my observation - Astarion is one of this types, 95% sure) Functions for ENTJ are Te-Ni-Se-Fi, for ESFP - Se-Fi-Te-Ni. Now if Astarion expiriences his loop, that should be either Te-Se, for ENTJ or Se-Te for ESFP. auxNi and auxFi have as much power as inferior functions here, even less. Looping ENTJs get involved in doing things very quickly with the resources that are available to them. They fail to use Ni to consider the bigger, longer-term picture. They’re closed off to such possibilities and are too focused on what they can do in the present. They also fail to use Fi to determine what they actually want, what means the most to them. Projects end up not being planned out and ENTJ can be surprised that in the end it didn’t really matter much to them. Looping ESFPs experience restlessness and act on them immediately, just for the sake being active and don’t necessarily make the wisest choices. They should use their Fi to determine which ones they value most and their Ni to figure out the longer term consequences. In summary, the fault in ENTJ looping is mostly about their failing to see the big picture/consequences as they usually do, while the fault in ESFP looping is mostly about not considering values as much as they usually do, but there are elements of the other in both cases. So the both loops are practically the same, indistinguishable to me, and I did my research on the matter. That explains why half people here on this website, see him as ENTJ and another half as ESFP. And Astarion's behaviour is not ENTJish nor ESFPish enough: his plans are not well thought, he speaks against Tav's Te-decisions, (possible aux Ni is off), he doen't know what would be better for him: to become an Ascendent Vampire or to stay spawn, (possible aux Fi is off) and let Tav decide this in the last second. And while he is in this Te-Se, or Se-Te loop, there is no way to see his true self. Even after Cazador's death and visibly changed Astarion's demeanor it's not possible to see what type he is. Healing takes time after all, sometimes a lot. My personal expirience with getting out of the Ni-Fi loop - you are not becoming yourself instantly. Feelings are all what matter at that moment, and it feels good, really good, finally be relieved. And I see it in the spawn Astarion - he full-heartedly thanks Tav, he shares a special moment with them on his own grave, because now it doesn't hurt to see it, for the first time in 200 years. So I'm like 95% sure the loop theory is Astarion's case here. That all being said, I, personally, still think he is ENTJ😈 and here is why:
