I think she’s a 5w6, not a 6w5. Type Six fears being alone and without support. Karen, on the other hand, is highly self-sufficient. She doesn’t expect much from anyone and doesn’t want them to expect too much from her. “I left the Winters because I was sick of everyone in the band trying to sleep with me. I wanted to just be a musician.” “I never promised Graham any future for us. And I was worried he was seeing one.” “I see the way a lot of younger marriages are these days, truly egalitarian, nobody serving anybody else. But that wasn’t the mold I saw. That wasn’t a mold most of us even had back then. What I wanted didn’t fit in with having a husband. I wanted to be a rock star. And then I wanted to live alone. In a house in the mountains. And that’s what I’ve done.” She also heavily identifies with her skills as a keyboardist. Competency triad makes a lot of sense for her. “I knew [Graham] liked me for my talent just as much as my looks. So it didn’t faze me much.” “I knew they’d see a girl. And I wanted them to see a keyboardist.” “If we want to be taken seriously as musicians, why are we using our bodies?” One of Karen’s primary motivations was maintaining her autonomy. That’s her reasoning behind not wanting a husband or kids. “I was scared of living my life, feeling like I’d anchored myself to the wrong dock. I was scared of being pushed to do something I knew I did not want.” “If I knew someone else would raise it, someone else would let go of their own dreams, someone else would sacrifice and keep everything together while I went and did what I wanted and came back on weekends… maybe then I might want a baby, too.” “I did what I wanted with my life and I don’t regret any of it in the slightest.” “My whole life, I have been a person who loves to sleep in a bed alone. And Graham is a guy who likes to wake up next to somebody. If he had had it his way, I’d’ve conformed to what everybody else did, to what everybody else wanted for their lives. But it wasn’t what I wanted.” Her relationship with Graham ended because she became frustrated that he didn’t get her and he wanted more from her than she was willing to give. This was an issue for them long before the Chicago Stadium show, too. She actively avoids securing a future with him throughout the book. “I said, ‘You don’t understand me. You expect me to be someone I’m not.’ And Graham said, ‘You never loved me the way I loved you.’ And both of those things were true.” Graham is one of the only people in the band that Karen is truly close to and she still keeps him at arm’s length, especially once she realizes they’re not on the same page. She spends the entire book hiding their relationship and trying to keep it separate from the rest of her life. This is the main reason I think she’s a Five: she compartmentalizes SO MUCH. I don’t get where the 6w5 consensus came from. Karen doesn’t use the band as a source of support and security; for the most part, she’s perfectly fine on her own. She’s there because she wants to be a good musician. She’s a non-stereotypical Five, but a Five nonetheless. I do think she has a 6 wing because she shows some 6-ish traits. However, 5w6 fits her much better overall.
