Living for appearances means that one's focus is not on their own experience but on the fantasy or anticipation of another's view, making the pursuit of vanity insubstantial. This concept aligns with the idea of "vanity of vanities" from Ecclesiastes, as it highlights the ephemeral nature of living for an image rather than from within. Vanity, in this context, is synonymous with narcissism. Narcissism is considered a universal aspect of the egoic structure, especially mapped in the right corner of the Enneagram. However, the term "narcissism" has been associated with multiple personality syndromes, particularly after the publication of DSM III, where it was linked to ennea-type VII. For this reason, the term “narcissism” has not been used in this discussion of vanity. Vanity is particularly prevalent in the “hysteroid” region of the Enneagram, which includes ennea-types II, III, and IV. In ennea-type II, vanity manifests through a combination of imaginative self-inflation and reliance on the support of specific individuals. Ennea-type III, on the other hand, actively works to prove their worth by projecting a self-image to a broader audience, striving for achievements defined by generally accepted standards. This energetic pursuit contrasts with ennea-type IV, which is more attuned to a devalued self-image, leading to a sense of unfulfilled vanity. Consequently, ennea-type III tends to be cheerful, while ennea-type IV leans towards depression. Ichazo, in his teachings, referred to “deceit” rather than vanity as the passion of ennea-type III, relegating vanity to the realm of fixations. However, the author has chosen to view vanity as a passion similar to pride, while seeing deception as the cognitive core or fixation in ennea-type III. Deceit here does not refer to a lack of truthfulness regarding facts (ennea-type III can be a truthful reporter) but instead involves a lack of sincerity in terms of emotions and pretense. This is distinct from the lying seen in ennea-type II or the manipulation in ennea-type VIII. The emotional tone of ennea-type III is one of neutrality or emotional control, where only socially acceptable emotions are acknowledged and expressed. In contrast to the comic mood of ennea-type II and the tragic mood of ennea-type IV, ennea-type III suppresses deeper emotional expressions. While pride (superbia) and not vanity is traditionally listed among Christianity’s seven deadly sins, both concepts are often juxtaposed. This is evident in common imagery that depicts pride as a woman gazing at herself in a mirror, such as in Hieronymus Bosch’s "Seven Deadly Sins." It is worth noting that the character disposition of ennea-type III is not included in DSM-III, which raises the question of whether this omission is related to the prominence of this personality type in American society since the 1920s.
