[1/2] I believe Thorfinn is mistyped not by an inadequate grasp of his defense mechanisms & limiting factors, but by an inadequate interpretation of the Enneagram itself. Many Fours have been typed SX6 on this site, and that’s an issue I intend to address as a whole whilst focusing on Thorfinn's case. According to the main Enneagram scholars, Óscar Ichazo and Claudio Naranjo, “Envy” of Type 4 was characterised as «a desire for a reality that isn't theirs» Fundamentally, E4 cannot accept the trauma or the situation around them & begins to live in ways that are considered inconceivable by others [hence the whole “I am different” coping]. They are found at the most nonconforming place in Enneagram which is beside E5 at the bottom/void of the Enneagram. At the bottom, they diametrically oppose E9's “Indolence”, meaning inherently accepting of others & the circumstances, hence deafening your awareness. E4 Ego-Fixation is called «Melancholy» According to the aforementioned scholars, Melancholy here arises from a «dissatisfaction with what is & a longing for what once was» or could've been. Melancholy here isn’t different at all from eternally lamenting for your situation and dealing with it like a kid that can’t move on from what happened. In Thorfinn's case, we can already start to draw a solid line. Thorfinn could not possibly accept the course of events that his journey had taken. He kept longing for a reality where his father wouldn’t have died – the reality of his childhood: the idealised, perfect childhood, where Vinland was still in sight. It is widely known that Fours are deeply attached to an idealised past that supposedly existed «until a frightening lack [or perceived lack] suddenly took place» As mentioned, we do know “Envy” as a drive is essentially willingly attaching to pain and sadness. Fours introject reality in such a distorted way that they have a sense of things never being enough. They become very indifferent to death or getting physically hurt—for what matters the most to them is their inner world in which «feelings were deeply hurt» by... life. Now, think about how Thorfinn or someone like Eren Jaeger would be in their relentless, near masochistic search for vengeance. That's the portrait of SP4. I will elaborate further below. Instead of assuming the “crybaby” ever-lamenting role that many erroneously attribute to E4 in general, Self-Preservation Fours channel their pain into willpower to postpone lamenting and become strong through the eagerness to protect a legacy. SP4 is known for rebelling against the overwhelming sadness experienced by Type 4. *E4 Conservation (Self-Preservation) – Tenacity* ❝Different from the "sufferer" (Social E4) and the "insufferable" (Sexual E4) is what is called the "suffered" (or “long-suffering”) in Spanish—an expression that speaks to us of a capacity for self-frustration and endurance. He's consistently a person whose "pain" works as a drive. He has shown that he is able to forget EVERYTHING he has ever treasured before if that meant he could get rid of what caused him such pain, but... he also knows, deep down, he cannot get his idealised life back.
