since 5s fear incompetence, they will detach themselves from engaging with reality because they don’t want their resources to be depleted. in order to feel competent, they will attempt to minimize their needs, often taking on the role of an observer to gain knowledge that will make them feel secure. this also means that 5s can focus intensely on their interests/areas of expertise, as going into depth about these things will make them feel more capable. i think kenma fits this very well. he doesn’t like to engage with others since it exhausts him, but at the same time he’s always observing people and trying to figure them out for his own reference. i think the way he detaches himself from situations is more characteristic of 5 than 9, as he doesn’t really avoid situations to maintain harmony (though you can argue he does to an extent) but he does it more so because he doesn’t want to expend his energy to meet the demands of others. an example of this is when he gets annoyed at yamamoto always talking about guts and calling it “meaningless,” because he sees it as a waste of his own mental resources to exhibit guts and appease others. he believes it’s much better to conserve his energy through the use of strategy/observation during games. 5s also often have problems with making friends like kenma does due to their tendency to detach and not get involved. kenma seems to show intense focus when solving problems, which is also common for 5s. they see this as an opportunity to “test” their skills in order to assess whether or not they are capable. for example, kenma often gets absorbed in playing video games, and in one chapter he says something like “clearing a game is even sadder than a game over” because he enjoys the mental challenge of it, which allows him to test his capabilities. he extends this mindset to how he plays volleyball, saying “even if a game doesn't seem clearable at first, after playing it over and over again, you can conquer it." kenma will continue to strategize and look for new ways to solve problems in order to refine his understanding, and once he gains the knowledge needed to “clear a game,” he will feel fulfilled (which relates back to 5s desire for competency). overall, core 5 just makes a lot of sense for him. if you look at subtype descriptions, sp 5 fits him much better than sp 9 as well. also, this isn’t really an argument but i have a hard time seeing him as someone with a gut type as a core (i mean, he even hates the word “guts”). he’s just much more of a cerebral person (i know it’s because he’s an INTP but still), so i think a head triad type seems more reasonable. he wants to find strategies to cope with his insecurity (head) rather than his anger (gut), and he does so through detachment and observation (enneagram 5).

Kenma Kozume (Japanese: 孤爪研磨, Kozume Kenma) was previously a 2nd-year student from Nekoma High. He was the volleyball team's setter and was referred to as the "heart" and "brain" of the team by his teammates.
