(1/8) As someone who's been a fan of Azumanga Daioh for a while now, I thought I'd like to take a shot at analyzing Osaka, who has an adorable design (in my opinion) and a rather unorthodox way of thinking about the world. Although she does not seem to be a textbook example of any of Jung's psychological types, I believe out of all them, the IT type (ie., the Ti-dom) is the one that best suits her. I did consider the IS type (Si-dom) for her, since she has the unassuming demeanor and lack of connection to reality that this type does, but in the end, I think her psyche is better explained in terms of Jung’s IT conception than his IS conception. To begin with, I'll analyze Jung's description of how IS sees the world: "Actually he lives in a mythological world, where men, animals, locomotives, houses, rivers, and mountains appear either as benevolent deities or as malevolent demons. That they appear thus to him never enters his head, though that is just the effect they have on his judgments and actions. He judges and acts as though he had such powers to deal with; but this begins to strike him only when he discovers that his sensations are totally different from reality. If he has any aptitude for objective reason, he will sense this difference as morbid; but if he remains faithful to his irrationality, and is ready to grant his sensations reality value, the objective world will appear a mere make-believe and a comedy. Only in extreme cases, however, is this dilemma reached. As a rule he re-signs himself to his isolation and the banality of the world, which he has unconsciously made archaic." In other words, an IS type (Si-dom) is imaginative/disconnected from reality without understanding that they are disconnected from reality. Their placid demeanor betrays a distorted worldview; the type that appears most sane actually has the strangest conceptualization of the world that everyone else can observe and touch. Think Anton from Ratatouille—a simple ratatouille dish at a restaurant, mere foodstuff to a Se user, becomes a direct connection to some distant childhood memory in Anton's mind, transforming what others perceive as a mundane object into something of great personal significance in his own mind. (Se users, on the other hand, tend to absorb sensory experiences as they are. A roller coaster is a thrill, but one to be passed over as soon as the next thrill comes. A high Ne user eagerly picks up an idea but drops it as soon as the next one comes, etc.) This disconnect from reality may seem to describe Osaka, who's known primarily for her disjointed thinking... except that Osaka does not focus on concrete objects in her tangents, but concepts. Despite the Si-dom's introversion hiding what can (uncharitably) be described as an actual delusion at worst, Si-doms are still primarily concerned with sensory data--that is, the data which can be gathered through with one's physiological senses. Here is an example of Osaka's usual dialogue: Osaka: So, hemorrhoids... Sakaki: Hm? Osaka: Let's say you're writin' the word "hemorrhoids" in hiragana, you put the dots on the "chi," don't ya? Not like you normally do with "shi." Sakaki: Uh, yeah. Osaka: But when I was lookin' it up in the dictionary, I was real surprised 'cause it was written with a dotted "shi." Sakaki: Oh, really? Osaka: You know seals, right? Sakaki: Huh? Osaka: It's "sea" plus "leopard" in kanji. Sakaki: Is... is that a fact? Osaka: I guess they must be pretty ferocious. But they look awful cuddly. (Episode 5) (Note that Osaka and Sakaki are on a beach during their summer vacation in this dialogue. This conversation is superficially connected to the current circumstances at best.)
