[Explanation for why Brett is a 9] Because I've seen some comments recently that are confused on why he's a 9 and not a 2, I thought I'd explain it. ↝Disconnect from the Internal Self↜ This aspect of the E9 refers to the inability or lack of desire to spend time looking inwards, and to deal with the true self. For social 9s, energy is instead directed towards the group. This means that personal desires and feelings are sacrificed in order to fit in with the group, and the love that should be directed towards the self is instead sent outwards. The sense of self of this type is determined entirely by external factors, such as which group they happen to be part of, and by the desires of the group which were picked up and absorbed. Brett sends all of his energy outwards like this, becoming obsessed with fitting in with others and being useful to others. > "I stay awake at night because I don't even know what my favourite color is, and I'm afraid I don't have a real personality" > "You know what? No, I don't need to have s3x with 100 strangers just to fit in" > "Because I need everyone to like me, and I freak out if they don't" ↝Workaholism↜ Connected to the previous point, the social E9 is a compulsive workaholic, believing that in order to be worthy of having a place in the group, extreme pressures must be taken on. They rarely ask for help, whether because they don't recognise that they need it or because they don't want to acknowledge it. The belief of so9s is "If I am useful, they will accept me." For Brett, this applies to everything from his workouts to his intensive efforts for the group. He ends up practically servile to everyone, and yet stays enthusiastic and determined throughout without realising how much it hurts him. ↝"Stunning"↜ Stunning is the tendency of so9s to swallow their pain, and forget that they feel it at all. They believe that any "bad" feeling needs to be avoided at all costs, and that the comfort of others is significantly more important. The thought here is that "the happier they see me, the more I am going to please them and the more they are going to love and accept me." They try to avoid contact with their feelings, nor with the truth of how they're being treated by others. Brett does this constantly, even from episode 1. To avoid the "bad thoughts" he listens to "Jock Jams," does pushups, or helps out others. While he does sometimes make statements about his discomfort, they're phrased in a way that sounds rehearsed, so it's likely that he's working with his therapist to set boundaries. ↝Childhood↜ While I won't use this as actual evidence, I do just want to point out that Brett fits perfectly into the childhood model of the so9. In childhood, so9s were invisible to their family, and often part of a large family. Typically there is a lack of love between the parents, as well as a complete lack of emotional support and attention from the parents to the child. They feel a desperation for love because it was limited. Despite this, so9s tend to not realise they were neglected at all until therapy, due to their tendency to repress negative feelings and events. All of this fits Brett perfectly, to the point where I'm convinced the writers know enneagram (joking). Hope this helps! If necessary I can talk about the ways he doesn't fit E2 later.
