Dutch is a nomad and an idealist, believing that the gang can change the world through anarchy. He turned himself into a Robin Hood figure, taking money from those who had more and giving it to those who had very little. He saw himself as a symbol of the romanticized Wild West and a humanitarian defender of the people resisting government control, supporting individual freedom and punishing common human cruelty and selfishness. His romantic image and charisma inspired his gang to believe in his vision of a "savage utopia".
