Si is hugely important in fencing. One of the most important aspects of fencing is muscle memory. You have to walk a certain way, with your dominant foot forward and your non-dominant foot behind ot at a 90-degree angle. You have to memorize all of the various parries and ripostes until they become second nature. One of the key aspects of Si is using past learning to deal with present situations, which occurs when you use the various parries and ripostes you have learned. One automatically has to go, "oh, I'm being attacked here, therefore I should use parry 6," or whatever is appropriate in the given circumstance. Decorum, politeness, and little rituals are also very important. After each bout, both the winner and loser politely acknowledge one another, say, "good bout," and shake hands. This is, also, automatic. I remember, I was at a tournament a few months ago, during the early stages of the coronavirus outbreak. A rule change was announced for that tournament, and declared that at the end of a bout, fencers would bump elbows instead of shaking hands, in theory minimizing contact. People still kept forgetting to touch elbows and instead shook hands as per usual, because it was an ingrained response.
