| DESMOND EZE'S CHARACTER TROPES | Broken Ace: Desmond is described as being very handsome and capable of making friends and attracting women easily, as well as being ranked the 3rd best student in his graduating class at Hercole University and becomes a highly-competent RealSlaek employee who quickly climbs the ranks . Despite this, Desmond is often prone to feeling profound sadness and neurosis when it comes to his life. This is due to his traumatic past concerning the event of his sibling’s deaths and his parents disowning him because of it, as well as the general distaste he has for the current state of his society. The Charmer: Desmond is able to attract the wanted attention of the desirable Chantelle Belle as well as the unwanted attention of the eccentric Margot Forster. Both womens attraction for him and the struggle that ensues over it ends in a gruesome fight and murder that later has to be covered up by him. He is also able to become one of the most recognised and well-known RealSlaek employees despite his many personal flaws such as being emotionally stunted and distant. The Chessmaster: Whilst working at RealSlaek, Desmond often enacts schemes such as the purposefully sabotaged Slaek heist and the framing of Lloyd for Margot’s death. These instances show his strategic ability when it comes to making plans that allow him to achieve his goals or evade justice for his crimes. Corrupt Corporate Executive: By the end of the book, Desmond rises to become the CEO of RealSlaek, a company known for its corrupt and evil practices. Dark and Troubled Past: Desmond was considered responsible for the death of all of his siblings. As a reckless teenager he decided to travel to a country known for harbouring a deadly disease and was unknowingly infected with it. He returned home and passed on the disease to his siblings, killing all three of them and making him an only child. This was an event that caused both of his parents to disown him, cutting him off for years until his mother only reconnected with him near the end of the book. Despair Event Horizon: After his first mission for RealSlaek, Desmond falls into a near-permanent catatonic state, showcasing a deep existential crisis at being forced to massacre his own neighbourhood. Even Evil Has Loved Ones: Despite his evil actions, he forms a complex, albeit twisted, relationship with Chantelle, seeks his mother's forgiveness, cares deeply for his grandmother and is temporarily broken up over being responsible for his childhood friend Alistair’s death. Face–Heel Turn: Initially a good student and caring grandson, Desmond's transformation into a ruthless operative for RealSlaek represents a complete moral reversal. Initially he resists RealSlaek, but eventually joins them and commits atrocities, showcasing a drastic shift in morality. Freudian Excuse: His tragic backstory and the guilt over his siblings deaths provide a psychological basis for his actions and descent into darkness. Genius Bruiser: He is very intelligent, as shown by his good grades and sharp mind, but also capable of physical combat, evidenced by his confrontation with the thug and ability to overcome Lloyd in a fight for his life. He is noted to have learnt some form of basic martial-arts in his past. Morality Chain: His actions are partly driven by a desire to become accomplished enough to make his parents forgive him and welcome him back into his life. Reconnecting with his mother after years causes him to feel guilt over his actions at RealSlaek, as he thinks of what she would think of him if she knew of them. Pet the Dog: His care for his grandmother, support for his girlfriend Chantelle, and his moment of reconciliation with his mother are brief instances of kindness in his otherwise dark character arc. Sociopathic Hero: His ability to commit murders, manipulate others, and feel aroused by the power and destruction he is capable of indicate sociopathic tendencies, despite him often showcasing guilt and remorse. The Stoic: Desmond usually maintains a calm and composed demeanour in even the most dire situations. When facing death , despite experiencing intense amounts of panic and strife internally as shown by his frantic in er monologues, Desmond appears to be accepting of his fate on the outside, appearing bold and unaffected in the eyes of others. The Unfettered: As Desmond rises in the company, he becomes more ruthless and shows less remorse for his actions to cope with his ever- increasing ambition. Villain Protagonist: A prime example by story's end.
