One thing that has bugged me for a while is the question "if Subject 2 wanted to experience the joy of living, why didn't he just leave Dragonspine and start a life of his own?" I've come up with several possible answers. 1. He was scared that Rhinedottir would somehow find out he survived being eaten by Durin and come back to finish the job, and he therefore stayed in Dragonspine to hide from her. 2. He felt that he couldn't earn others' approval being himself. Maybe it was for the same reason he was discarded by Gold, maybe he was too out-of-touch with modern life to fit in (he was dead for many years). 3. He was worried that Albedo would find out he was alive and hurt him, maybe to hide the fact that he's a humunculus. 4. He was somewhat lazy and wanted to have the friendships, posessions, position, etc Albedo spent years to gain. 5. He didn't have the skills or didn't know how to sustain himself outside of Dragonspine (I find this one unlikely - if he was able to imitate Albedo's life so well I think he probably could've figured it out, but it's still a possibility, or maybe that was just his motivation in the beginning). 6. He wanted exactly what Albedo had. But what if his reason for not starting his own life WAS that he felt that he couldn't be accepted by others for who he was, perhaps the same quality/qualities that got him killed by Rhinedottir? This feeling that he can't be loved along with his simultaneous longing for others' love definitely points to him being an image type. Here are some very brief summaries of the three image types: 2 - gains others' affection by helping them, being involved in their lives, and making others "indebted" to them. They can sometimes force their help onto others and then expect the affection they crave. This can make them very proud and egotistical - 2s feel that as long as they are helping others, others are obligated to give them affection. 3 - gains others' affection by proving to others that they are successful, be it socially, professionally, athletically, etc. They suppress emotions which could seem inefficient and instead focus on achieving their goals, hoping that others' praise quells their desire for love. If they feel that their real self is not successful or good enough to be worthy of others' affection (as they very often do), they will usually suppress their true feelings and identity in favor of a more successful one. 4 - feel that they are uniquely, inherantly-flawed, and that they essentially are or have it worse than others. Unlike the other image types, 4s embrace this flawed nature and make it a part of their identity. Since their identity relies on this flaw, the idea of being whole and "okay" becomes scary to them - they fear that if they are no longer flawed, people will no longer find them interesting or help them ("creaky wheel gets the grease" sort of mentality). So they make sure that they are never like other people, that they are always specially-flawed, specially-sad. At the same time, they envy others and feel that they are constantly-lacking. We don't know much about Subject 2, but based on current knowledge, I would guess that he is a 3. He is willing - hell, he desperately WANTS to completely-erase his identity and become the person that was accepted by Gold, who has family, who has a prestigious job, who is liked by others... Albedo. As brothers, Albedo really does seem to fit the role of "the golden child" between the two of them. Furthermore, he wants to IMPROVE on Albedo even as he is - he gets rid of the mark on his neck because he can't bear the thought of being imperfect (another behavior I can't imagine a 4 having, seeing as their identities are inherantly-tied to them being flawed). At one point during the event, I think he says something along the lines of "worthless things should be discarded." It's possible that he's just repeating something Gold or someone else said, but if he truly believes this, then this would once-again point to E3, with his desire to be "good enough" and "worthy." It's possible that this complex was instilled in him when he didn't live up to Gold's expectations and was literally fed to a dragon and then had to watch his younger brother, A), be accepted by Gold, and B), also be liked by others and have a prestigious occupation in Mondstadt while he hid in Dragonspine and others didn't even know he existed. You can't tell me that wouldn't **** a person up a little. All in all, I think a lot of people are getting side-tracked by the fact that he's envious of Albedo. 3s also tend to struggle a lot with envy. What I think should be focused on is his primary motivation - I just don't see the need to be uniquely-damaged in Subject 2. I do, however, see a desire to suppress his authentic self in favor of a successful persona. Anyway, that's all I can think of for now. Others' input will be highly-appreciated.
