[1/6] SX5 Socionics Archetype: IEI > ILI It seems like there are two interpretations of SX5. One side is interpreting SX5 as a person who searches for the ultimate relationship, while the other side interprets SX5 as someone who doesn’t believe in love anymore and has a cynical attitude towards romance. While both sides have a point, this argument will try to break down the SX5 to its core, and why, when we break it down, the SX5 archetype is IEI > ILI in Socionics. Let’s get started. When the Avarice of E5, the passion to hold back and hold on to E5’s things while greedily wants to acquire more from the E5’s sanctuary, meets the relationship-oriented, intense, Sexual instinct, it will produce a character with the greed of ideal relationship. Ichazo assigned the descriptor “Confidence”, which refers to the need for someone to feel safe with, while Naranjo assigned the word “Trust” which refers to their Excessive demand for trust to be able to trust and love. Sexual 5 is the countertype of E5, which means that Sexual 5 has some structural difference compared to common E5 descriptions. Mainly, this is the E5 that is drawn to the romance aspect of life, while its subtype siblings have mostly renounced themselves from this aspect. Sexual 5 is a highly conflicting character. On one side, Sexual 5 has a high, ideal vision of what their ideal relationship should be. However, due to their Avarice, they hold back their affection, which in turn would make it harder to get this “idealized” person. As a result, they wander the world as a kind of hopeless romantic, distrusting and pushing back the others because they want to reserve their sanctuary to their ideal loved one. Their ultimate quest of life is finding the idealized trust and intimacy with this ideal person. Quoting from Avaricia, in their childhood settings, Sexual 5 was highly invaded (overcared) and abandoned. They felt that their parents didn’t understand them. This resulted in polarity between wanting an exclusive and closed one versus the desire of isolation. Their invasion made Sexual 5 become physically fragile and sexually devitalized. Being “separated” with their physical body, Sexual 5 harboured the feeling of being “strange”, as if they came from the other world. As a result, Sexual 5 found refuge in nature, the plants, the animals. Sexual 5 managed to contact the “magic” in life because these things gave them a sense of space and refuge from their real world. This inner experience of connecting with the “magic” of life would then be transformed into the need of finding the ideal person who would give Sexual 5 the trust and intimacy they lost in their childhood. Despite all of those, Sexual 5 is, in fact, one of the most seductive characters of the Enneagram. Sexual 5 is not passive in this search for “ideal one”. Instead, they seduce and lure their ideal one with artistic and intellectual style of seduction. Many poets and artists belong to this subtype. These poets and artists often dedicate their works to this special someone, a common practice in the modern day of the arts and entertainment world. People may have various interpretations to their work of arts, while the Sexual 5 may publicly agree with the public’s interpretation of their art. However, deep down, Sexual 5 dedicates their work of arts to this special someone they have or they desire.

The Sexual Five expresses the passion of avarice through searching for the ideal or ultimate relationship. But, they can become too picky about the people to whom they want to be close, sometimes requiring the “right person” to pass a lot of tests. They have a romantic, artistic, or imaginative streak, and a strong connection to their emotions, but they usually communicate them only indirectly through some medium of self-expression. Unlike the other Type 5 subtypes, they have a greater need for intimacy under the right circumstances—usually when they find someone they trust who will appreciate them despite their flaws.
