Luiz Fernando da Silva Borges, (born May 24, 1998), is a widely awarded Brazilian engineer, scientist, and inventor, best known for his work on medical devices, mainly in the field of brain-machine interfaces. He was the first person to be awarded best of category and first place in the 2016 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair for his biomedical engineering project: A decoder algorithm for transradial myoelectric prosthesis with tactile feedback. He also received The Philip V. Streich Memorial Award and the asteroid 33503 Dasilvaborges was named after him by Ceres Connection and the International Astronomical Union. During the pandemic of COVID-19, Luiz worked on the development of emergency and low-cost pulmonary ventilators that were used in a Brazilian hospital. During the children's COVID-19 vaccination campaign, Luiz led a pioneering effort in Brazil using virtual reality glasses to decrease children's stress during the vaccine shot. Currently, Luiz leads a project intending to identify and enable the communication of people in a pseudocoma by the means of an EEG-based brain-computer interface.
