[spoilers discussed] daniel believes in a romanticized version of his relationship with candy (Fi + Ne) and because of that neglects the practicality of it all (Si + Te). like, it’s very hard for a relationship to survive when both people are addicts and your girl’s parents hate you and you both have an unstable living situation. one’s love for their partner, no matter how strong, cannot overcome all these other things. i think the three stages of the story being heaven, earth and hell are a pretty good representation of this. dan will choose what he prefers over what would be efficient for everyone, like the scene where candy brings up that she’s the only one “working”. dan says he doesn’t wanna do that kind of “work” bc he’d be doing it with people he doesn’t want to do it with (men), but he doesn’t even realize that candy is in the exact same position, yet she does work. if he had stronger use of Te, he would’ve just done the work in order to make more money and because that’s kinda just the sensible thing to do. dan shows development when he uses Si/Te at the end of the story where he doesn’t give candy an invitation back into his life, despite how much he still loves her. he understands that if he and candy become involved with each other again, she will relapse and they’ll be back in the same situation all over again (Si). so he uses Te to basically tell her to protect her sobriety, but implies that she can’t do that while being with him, even if there is still love among them. sorry for giving a long comment to a profile with 2 votes but him being voted ISFJ 9w8 is driving me nuts a little bit
