(1/2) While I’d initially voted Fukiko as an E1, after some contemplation I actually think she’s a Social 2, though there is a good argument for E1 in the comments which I also encourage you to read. I’m going to focus mainly on E1 vs E2 since to try and dispute E1 E2 and E3 at the same time would take a fairly long time, (though I might quickly go over why I don’t see her as an E3 in the comments of this.) First, I’ll just briefly compare triads of E1 and E2, starting with the centres of intelligence. E1 is a part of the anger/gut triad, while E2 is a part of the shame/heart triad, or it can sometimes be called the image triad. The heart triad will unconsciously portray a specific image to compensate for their feelings of shame, E2s specifically maintain an image of being necessary, loved by others, of being needed by others. Fukiko is a challenging character to try and analyze, but one thing I think should be obvious should be her image that she portrays and maintains, through the sorority, through her connections and relations to others, her image and how others perceive her is important to her. She doesn’t embody anger as much as she does shame and image, E1s are always angry with themselves and others for not being perfect. While there’s no doubt Fukiko has a 1 fix, I don’t think it’s her core type, she’s far too focused on her image for it to simply be a fix. The other triads to consider are Object Relation, frustration (E1) versus rejection (E2), E1’s “become the ultimate guiding force to compensate for the lack thereof from the protective object” and E2’s “amplifying their need for relationship and connection due to having rejected the need for guidance and protection, mothering identification”. I feel like this should go without saying, but the sorority and her relations with people are quite literally everything to her. Even her incredibly twisted relationship with Rei was a way of making sure she was always needed by Rei, she couldn’t fathom the idea of Rei not needing her love and validation in some way. I think one of the things that makes her such an unsettling character is that we the audience KNOW she isn’t as warm and kind as she makes out, we see what she’s like behind the external image that she projects and the borderline insanity she’s capable of. But think, to literally everyone else and even us initially she’s the embodiment of an E2 with the image she projects. (Unfortunate case of RH and RHETI users thinking E2 = sweet and bubbly) I won’t drone on about triads for too long, since they’re not the main part of the argument anyways. I want to specifically focus on Fukiko being a social 2, the subtype is really important to understanding how she’s a core 2. Here are just a few quotes from Naranjo to either familiarize people with attributes of So2, or to just help build my case slightly. “When we allude to the word that gives name to this subtype, “Empress” or “Emperor”, we speak of domain, territoriality, leadership and protection. And also of tyranny, abuse, absolutism and disproportion.” “The Social Two shows a high intolerance to frustration and feels impotent when his projects or ambitions do not prosper. If he fails, he feels from disgruntled to furious, and will hold the other person or the situation responsible for it, not being able to recognize his part of responsibility or the immoderation of the project. He can easily be ruthless with the people in his charge, although he believes himself to be an understanding, fair and beloved boss.” I firstly wanted to include these quotations to demonstrate how E2s have a capacity for violence contrary to RH perpetuated stereotypes about E2s, but also to compare this to how she is described on her wiki page, “She appears to be a calm and generous person, but she is a cruel and manipulative person who often psychologically and physically torturing Rei Asaka for several ambiguous reasons”. How Fukiko is described here matches these descriptions of Social 2 quite well. “He needs to regain the unconditional love he once felt, and he believes he can achieve this by establishing an exchange in which he will be the kind one and the other will need him forever, thus putting him in an important place.” “As chameleon-like as the E3, the Social E2 uses his appearance more as a tool to achieve his objectives than as part of an image. It takes advantage of its strategic adaptability and empathy to identify the signals that define the different groups with which it interacts. He subtly transforms his appearance without losing his identity or his desire to stand out, and integrates himself into the group he is interested in, managing to be seen and admired for the value he adds to the group with his mere presence.” It feels important to mention at this point that E3s have the defence of identification, where the E3 will adapt their image and their behaviour to group settings, something which Fukiko does not do.
