London is the capital city of the United Kingdom and is also its largest city, with its greater metropolitan area having a population of around 14.4 million people (approximate, as of 2019). An ancient city that has been around since the Roman Empire (who founded it as 'Londinium', in the year 47 CE), London has served as the capital for the Roman British province as well as for later, the Kingdom of England (ruled by Anglo-Saxons and later, Normans), before it became the capital of the world's largest empire (The British Empire) around 17th-20th century, de facto being the 'Caput Mundi' of the world, during those times. Today, London is a very cosmopolitan city, still being an economic, political and cultural powerhouse, as it is one among the largest metropolises in the world. It is also the residence of the British Royal Family.
