I think his Ni appeared when at first he was hoping to meet Hana but the more he thinks about and know about the situation the more he looses this hope but it soon returns to him when he finds Hana's note because the focus of the Ni perception is frequently zooming in on various thoughts and feelings and changing angles on a subject, Ni dominant people tend to experience their inner world as constantly fluctuating, and since the Fe auxiliary serves Ni and is primarily focused on other people, Fe is the way that the INFJ processes their emotions, so I guess it made all that makes more sense, also his relationship with Natsu and the way he's trying to support and help her since the first time they met.
