Constantine I (Latin: Flavius Valerius Constantinus; Greek: Κωνσταντῖνος, translit. Kōnstantînos; 27 February c. 272 – 22 May 337), also known as Constantine the Great, was a Roman emperor from 306 to 337. Flavius Valerius Aurelius Constantinus Augustus was the eldest son of emperor Constantius Chlorus, and only son of his through Helena, who was known to be a Christian. Constantine was a controversial emperor, as he used Christianity to unite the Roman Empire, but after an unnecessary civil war with Maxentius.
