Just so you know, this kid has a breakdown in Neon Genesis Evangelion 2 the game, questioning his own life and value constantly, confessing he's lonely and no matter how much he wanted to get with humans, he just can't pull himself together with his identity + existential crisis (well until Shinji helps). So yeah, he's definitely a loner type, and he seemed socializing only in Shinji's perspective. Plus he's not always perfect and planned as he looks, he has a strong self-sacrificing will and constantly shows it subconsciously.
