I strongly recommend to watch Ledhead's video on why Half-Life 1 is so unforgiving. It basically goes in depth about how Half Life is different from all other fast-paced FPS games at the time. Usually in games you have to run and gun, dodging enemy attacks and getting out alive. But in Half Life you're not a soldier - you're a theoretical physicist, you gotta think like one. Half Life's combat is based on outsmarting your enemies, especially in the first game. You have to set up traps, know how enemies will react and be incredibly creative with your approach to combat. I believe it's a very Ne-based approach rather than your traditional Se formula other shooters offer.
