When Ichabod first hears the legend of the Headless Horseman, he writes it off as the work of superstition since he considers himself to be a "logical person." Because he keeps trying to reform the local government, his New York City employer sends him to Sleepy Hollow to find out what happened there. Ichabod comes armed with tools of his own invention, ready to analyze and deduce. When he learns that the Horseman really does exist and is really Headless, he goes through a brief but intense period of introspection during which he is compelled to reevaluate his prior beliefs and adopt a new path of action. Ichabod Crane is a man "ahead of his time," since he is already experimenting with new ideas and encouraging the police to "catch up with the times." "In a short time, we will be in the nineteenth century!" he exclaims as he performs an autopsy, convinced that a closer, more analytical examination of the relevant elements can reveal the cause of death and "clues." At first, Ichabod is dismissive of the Horseman's existence, but after being exposed to local superstitions on multiple occasions, he begins to believe in its veracity. Throughout the story, Ichabod tries out, abandons, and sometimes completely reverses his suspicions, conclusions, and hypotheses; occasionally, he is precise and right in his conclusion. Ichabod's mental collapse with this new information and his usual politeness that occasionally misses the mark are both manifestations of his lesser Fe.
