The son of the renowned German knight Frederick Schtauffen, Siegfried fell into a bad crowd and joined a bandit group named the Schwarzwind. One fateful night, the bandit warband launched a surprise attack on a band of knights deserting from the army. Besting the knights' leader in single combat and lifting the severed head into the pale moonlight, he gazed upon the ghastly and pained face of his own father Frederick and screamed. Crazed, he ran into the woods and convinced himself that someone else had killed his father, and so he set out for revenge against a killer who existed only in his fevered mind. Finding the cursed sword in Valencia Port, he was corrupted by Soul Edge from the moment he grabbed the hilt, and became a monster named Nightmare. Newly freed from Soul Edge's control by Xianghua and Kilik, Siegfried is haunted by guilt and seeks to atone for the sins he committed as Nightmare, as well as for the patricide that had sparked his descent into madness.
