The only cheater I sympathize with. Her husband left her behind to raise two toddlers (one being autistic and one having a very defiant personality) just because he cOuLdN't HaNdLe his son being autistic. Then when he came back he took barely any interest in Sam and she had to continue to raise him on her own. She made a lot of bad decisions on the show, but they were understandable. And she is by every means a far better parent than Doug. He didn't even try to form a relationship with Sam until Sam was 17. Overprotective is better than neglectful. Doug is the one who makes me sick, not Elsa. She was a practically single mom trying her best. She was treated terribly by Doug and Casey. She did everything for everybody and never got any appreciation for her efforts. No matter how much Casey pushed her away, Elsa was always there for her. She also was immediately accepting of Casey's and Izzie's relationship, and took Izzie in and took care of her. All Doug did was hurt Izzie and challenge her and Casey's relationship. She was also very supportive of Julia throughout her struggles. Case in point: Elsa is far from perfect, but doesn't deserve all the hate she gets.

Elsa Gardner (Jennifer Jason Leigh) is Sam and Casey's overprotective mother. She cannot completely accept the fact of the handicap of her son and often wishes just to run away from her life and allday problems. One big step she makes just at the beginning at the series is meeting another man she secretly starts dating and finally has an affair with. Later she works hard to redress this big mistake, but that seems to be very difficult and almost impossible.
