He’s dutiful to a fault, understands the role that his mother laid out for him and even has the foresight to understand when his time has come. High introverted intuition without question and I think his flame being so versatile and the way that he trains his knights to be able to use his flame for multiple purposes shows his Te. Of course we don’t see him in action all that much but the descriptions for items, the trailers, and his entire character inspiration being a classic example of the “scapegoat/Baphomet” trope (also seen with Dracula or even a little bit of Batman being the symbol in the Dark Knight). He kind of reminds me of Arthur from the last kingdom as well (cerebral, measured, pragmatic, but ruthless). He believes that when things are going wrong it is a punishment and he isolates himself while abstaining from Rellana who he sends off to defend his castle. Marika of course isn’t just his mother but is accepted as the God of the land and he appears to be her favorite child (as evident through game items). Falling out with her is no different than if God were to give you an order but, after completing the task you would not be allowed back in heaven… it’s rough out here. I’ll also finalize by mentioning the efficiency of Messmer’s war on the crucible which was said to be “Without grace or honor” we find out that Marika was angry with the crucible for torturing and murdering her village and that Messmer was tasked with exacting revenge on her behalf. But Messmer’s assault was measured and thorough more so than it was malicious or disrespectful. Despite his love for his mother he seems empathetic towards the people he is killing (including the tarnished) however as he and the rest of his appointed comrades proclaim repeatedly anyone who falls out of favor with God must be dealt with. He even uses the words “Embrace of Messmer’s flame” as an intentional double meaning. Messmer longed for his mother’s embrace and is denied the chance to ever speak to her again once he begins his mission. He is essentially saying that the only warmth that he or his enemies will ever feel again is from the fires that have cursed him and the ones that will be the undoing of both himself and his enemies. With very few voice lines he is able to be portrayed as a deeply complicated, loyal, pragmatic, and judicious character. Even the judgmental tone that he has towards Marika realizing that only her grace could have led us to him, knowing that with this grace we are her chosen lord and that he will be killed, and even the implications of someone who is really… no different than he is being chosen to become the next ANNOINTED person. He was built different, hats off to Fromsoft for this one.
