Though he initially despises the Socs, he eventually realizes that being wealthy doesn’t actually leave them exempt from everyday problems—they just have different problems than greasers do, they're still human. It takes him a lengthy amount of time to acknowledge that his older brother Darry actually loves him. He’s frequently redefining his ideas about right and wrong, and doesn’t rely on others for his moral compass. He rushes into a burning church to save others not because it is socially expected of him, but because he personally believes that it is the gallant, correct thing to do. Ponyboy feels alienated from the rest of the gang due to how unalike he is in comparison to them.
