She is said to have been very vivacious and fun-loving (her parents affectionately called her a little angel) with a deep interest for arts, especially music. She also liked to get her own ways, as a child, as she hid numerous sweets from her dentists. Her uncle and husband Leopold I was infatuated with her, and they shared many similar interests and became firm patron of arts and festivities. Despite their marriage being an arranged one, it quickly became a happy, affectionate conjugal match. Margaret was loved and pampered by Leopold, and she equally returned his affections. However, their union failed to produce a healthy male heir, and this convinced Margaret that such tragedy was caused by Jews residing in Austria. She convinced Leopold to banish the Jews from the Hapsburg Empire, to which he agreed. Eventually, weakened by several pregnancies and miscarriages, she died aged 22. Her death deeply saddened the emperor, who remarried twice to gain male heirs but never truly forgot his beloved niece and first wife.
