The dude's key motivation in the beginning is minding his own business and staying secure so he's not in disrupting his life's "peace" (i.e. what he's used to, what's predictable, what lets him get by), no matter how it affects him and those within his control. Initially way too much of a pushover and a coward to be a core 3 - not every 9 is like this obviously but the unhealthy ones are. He doesn't care if he's recognized for his achievements so much as he does laying low and making sure things go "right." I think he's being mistyped as a 3 because when they're growing positively, 9s get more assertive and have more of those traits because they're actually establishing a sense of individuality and recognizing their own agency. Nanbu's character development it's all about how he overcomes that passive and destructively-submissive behavior and becomes the man who knows his worth and can stand on his own two feet. He's very forceful and sure of himself toward Joe so I'm leaning towards 8 wing, but in 8 in his tritype makes no sense to me because for all his tough talk it takes a lot to push this guy to a confrontation on his own (which can be a good thing because he's much better at keeping a cool head than Joe). Also a little confused about the MBTI? I'm not very well-versed but he doesn't seem like an ESFJ to me.
