ISTJ is a reasonable vote since Ayanami willingly makes himself part of a military hierarchy and seems to navigate it well. However, a lot of details about him suggest a highly future-oriented thinking, as well as a lack of preference for Si in general. Initially, he advertised himself as an ardent nationalist who would do anything to protect his country. When he got to a high enough position, though, his nationalism turned out to be if not a sham then at least something not as relevant to him personally. He utilized government resources for his own gain, and his actual plans were not related to any sort of community or duty. He was fine waiting for 10 years for the right moment to successfully overthrow another commander and take his spot to better serve those personal ends, although, admittedly, they are revealed only in the manga. Ayanami also showed a strong connection to the subconscious and the more subtle aspects of reality. He is not a loner and is aware of the feelings of his friends, to the point of them having so much trust in him as to allow him to partially control their minds, if necessary. He is quite adept at psychological manipulation, exploiting what he can sense others deeply value or desire. The only thing that breaks his composure is when he does not predict something well enough, which rarely happens. He suffers from nightmares of his previous life, and eventually the subconscious personality takes almost completely over him. Lastly, as a trivia bonus, his character design is made to resemble that of Labrador, who is a high Ni user.
