i think a lot of people overlook how well he’s written a lot of times. he’s such a good foil for finn it’s crazy. finn and jake both have immense abandonment issues and finn uses to keep him going, like as motivation. finn would literally do absolutely anything to not have to feel abandonment. he does so much for others because he can’t stand the thought of not being needed while jakes abandonment issues kind of act as a main fear for him? finn will do something because of his abandonment and jake won’t do something because of his abandonment if that makes sense. jakes issues manifest a lot in his fear of commitment. the best example i can think of is jakes family. he dated lady the entire series, had kids with her, and said “lady is basically my wife” but he didn’t marry her. and it really surfaces with his kids. he wasn’t in there lifes at all pretty much bc he was so afraid of failing as a parent he just couldn’t handle the pressure, and you can tell he has so much guilt regarding it but he doesn’t do anything about it. when he tries to develop relationships with his kids after they’ve grown up it’s always temporary and very much mimicking his own father in the process. which i thinl was a really good way of showing how easily the cycle of truama is passed through. jakes kids had to inherit his truama despite not going through what jake went through. tbh i don’t really see jake as a happy character, ironic for someone so laid back and positive. but his arc isn’t really that happy when u think abt it.

Finn's chummy, size-shifting bulldog friend (not pet) and foster-brother. He is more laid back than Finn, but also enjoys adventure. He sometimes gives Finn brotherly advice, but it is not often helpful.
