Why is he voted sx5? Or any E5 for that matter? Even though sx5 is the countertype, it is still a type which is characterized by its detachment from their emotions and isolation from others completely. Even if you consider E5’s attachment with being knowledgeable and intellectual, this is not a pure interest. Rather, it’s a means of the E5 to protect itself from danger. This is quite unlike Tang who rambles about his knowledge on JTTW to either teach others, or to boast what he knows. I think he better fits the social subtype of E4. To quote Naranjo: “The social E4 is a person who complains too much, is very tearful and often puts himself in the role of a victim. In the DSM-IV, a category of person given to self-sabotage is suggested. The characteristic pointed out by Ichazo for this character is shame, which descriptively seems to me to be a success but it is not enough to describe a neurotic need. Certainly, these are people who underestimate themselves, and therefore feel less than others. But how do you explain why these people are so given to self-blame and to comparing themselves unfavorably with others? “ (27p) While less shown off in the earlier seasons 1 and 2, it definitely started to be a central focus of his character just how much he feels inferior to others, comparing himself to Tang Sanzang specifically: “But, unlike the great Monk, I’m not.. great.” (S3 episode 12) He also tries to prove his worth to the group, even coming across as proud in some instances, like with his knowledge or with how eager he is to be the narrator, often to an annoying degree to the other characters. He is adamant to be loved and to be seen as an important person to the people he loves, but, at the same time, he doesn’t have the confidence to assert himself. This is why Macaque’s words hurt him so much in the episode Benched from season 3, to which he retorts by saying that while he’s still searching for his purpose, he does feel loved by his friends. Another factor present in so4 is its laziness, as described in its trait structure: “You are recalcitrant about committing and lazy about getting a task done. He tends to postpone his execution because he always feels that he is not up to the task and very often he believes that he is incapable or that he does not do it to the best of his ability. Fear of failure paralyzes you.” . This is directly criticized in Tang by Subhodi, to which Tang replies with: “I know, my issue is my self-confidence..” which is an irrational idea present in any E4 that Tang defaulted to, despite having had no time to practice his new abilities. This lack of confidence also makes it so he’s more paranoid, which is especially present in season 4 with both his body language and some of his lines. "I lost my cheat sheet so we don’t know where we are and these guys are desensitized to my breakdown so I need a reaction..! For the love of the great Sage give me a reaction!!” “I’m sorry.. it’s just that I’m stressed, okay? (...) And I can’t even use my powers properly! I just feel so.. useless.” He can also become quite cranky and defensive when it comes to receiving criticism from others about his self, which is shown off in a gag in a season 1 episode, and first few minutes of episode 4 of season 4, where MK argues that they could’ve found their friends if Tang hadn’t been complaining so much, to which he deflects that criticism by blaming someone else, Azure Lion. This is a defense mechanism very much present in a heart core, so4 included. I can see an argument being made for so9 for Tang, but I see that type as being too detached with its own emotions in favor of others and I don’t see it fitting with his more closed off attitude with the earlier seasons. Tang is way too connected with his emotions, his sense of inferiority, while still having the social instinct need to be acknowledged and to have a place in the group, as described in the E4 book: “The social E4 is hungry to be loved, and to achieve this he invests a lot of energy in being recognized as belonging, having a place in the group, being considered and feeling important. Paradoxically, it is usually solitary, silent and docile. He prefers to hide, he doesn't like being the center of attention at all, which he avoids from time to time, but at the same time if he is not remembered, if he is not paid attention to, he suffers and feels non-existent. He doesn't want to be in the center because it scares him and he doesn't feel equal enough, but he has an overwhelming desire to be seen, with the illusion of being discovered in his invisibility. At the same time, when he sees himself, he feels that he has something deeply inadequate, wrong or dirty inside him that makes him feel uncomfortable and ashamed.”. You're allowed to disagree with this!! I do encourage discussion on this, and I accept any different take presented that has a good basis, so you can reply to me even if you do disagree!

Tang, occasionally known as Mr. Tang, is a member of the Monkie Kids. After the Demon Bull King was freed from his imprisonment, Tang was one of the four members that assisted MK in his quest to give the Golden Staff to the Monkey King. Eventually, Tang and the others celebrated when MK defeated the Demon Bull King. After several weeks, when the Demon Bull King and the Bull Clones took over the city after being possessed by Lady Bone Demon, Tang supported MK by helping him fend off the Bull Clones while MK freed the Demon Bull King from the spirit's possession. When the Spider Queen and her Spider-Bots took control of the civilians at New Year's, Tang and the rest of MK's team teamed up with Red Son to travel to the Celestial Realm to look for an antidote that can cure the civilians.
