I guess I can see by demeanor how people assumed he would be an ISTJ. But I just can’t. This dude’s Ti & Se are insanely utilized. He’s an incredibly hands-on person & it’s pretty much referenced a LOT throughout the story. He’s got oddly creative & roundabout methods to reach conclusions or to find solutions to his problems— he will traverse through options & find one that aligns with what he thinks is most logical given a random sequence of deductions. Most we see this— rather where it’s initially the most prevalent is in his first few interactions with Haiga at the brothel. His reasoning behind working at the brothel & the many leaps he did to conclude that this would be the most effective way for him to find love, even if it’s by no means efficient. Also, he doesn’t seem to give a single fuck about social norms. Societal norms are pretty important to ISTJs to some degree, this is something I’ve noted they all seem to share. They uphold some sort of societal norm to a strict degree, but Kanae is very much the opposite. He doesn’t care, mostly because he is so naturally different that he doesn’t fit what society deems appropriate anyway. Nor does he try to adhere to it by any means, he has a sort of “rebellious” streak to him that almost makes it seem as though he’s actively trying to do the opposite REPEATEDLY. He also seems to only follow his own guidelines of personal ethics— even down to how he navigates relationships. He excels at hands-on activities most, almost everything we see from him involves him utilizing his senses & his awareness of them, even within other people. He’s also a lot more fluid overall than people think. He has certain things he’s rigid in, but for the most part he’s a very down-to-earth, go with the flow kind of guy— in a way that he’s able to adapt well to the unpredictability within his environments, even at his job. He doesn’t have things strictly planned out in advance for the future, nor does he seem to really reference or utilize the past much outside of him talking about his sexuality… which doesn’t really mean much, since most people would relay this in that manner regardless of MBTI type. He also shows very subtle usage of Ni, via his internal dialogue where he’s constantly asking “What will happen if we keep this up?” “Where is this relationship going.” He seems to approach looking too far out into the future with avoidance and fear, he seems far more comfortable and rooted in the present. (Which I honestly admire, since I tend to forget about it at times myself) In any case, it was evident during his little withdrawal from any intimacy with Haiga that he foresaw himself getting far too attached/vulnerable & immediately tried to shut it down. (Obviously it fails) Likewise, earlier in the manga after their second visit, we see Kanae watching as Haiga walks off— telling the man at the front desk to give him cheaper packages since he knows 1. Haiga is going to continue showing up to meet him 2. His coworkers are going to try to mooch off of him if they think he has money— in turn he’s trying to proactively protect him. Likewise, during the era in which he shuts things down, he’s also come to terms with the fact that Haiga is special to him— so the goal he had with the brothel is no longer needed. And well, inferior Fe is just blatant. Clear as day. But I’ll go in depth should someone ask. Kanae isn’t as strict or imposing as someone who utilizes Te would be. I think people forget that Te is a pretty strict function, and Kanae is an individual that very evidently goes with the flow in ways I cannot really fathom myself. More power to him though. Also, despite his seeming need for security to some degree. I wouldn’t particularly say his character is “motivated” by it or fears the lack of it like an enneagram 6 would. In any case, my point is that he’s extremely nonconformist (almost in a way that rings rebellious), and VERY spontaneous. He just kinda has an idea & rolls with it without needing any external proof or validation, if it validates the logical processing in his own mind— it’s enough. And he does this with just about everything, lucky for him, he’s smart so it all works out. Ti is an incredible function, often always getting misunderstood for Te… very quite often on this website as a whole. And of course vice versa. In conclusion, he’s a very cool, laid back, down to earth guy who is… just some guy. LOL Jokes aside, he appears to be all of these things to mask vulnerability, and the deep layers of emotion he feels inside. Among many other things… blah blah. I almost used up my character slots. I can see why people thought ISTJ on a surface level (No I can’t, I’m lying to you all. It makes no sense.) As for enneagram, I think 9 makes the most sense tbh. He isn’t exactly confrontational, but he can stick up for himself & those he cares about. I think e9s get too much of a rep for being “pushovers,” but I don’t think that’s even remotely true.
