So rare to see a complex ESFP character in media, but he’s a fantastic example of one who is. His arc in season 2 was just fantastic, going from a deeply unhealthy ESFP who is loud and annoying and tries to interject himself places he’s not wanted to changing to still a flawed human, yet one who is trying his hardest to be better. And the ways he improves demonstrates some of healthy ESFPs biggest strengths. His Se is clear- he adapts very easily and thrives on changing physical experiences. He was a complete natural at ‘expo’ (unlike Sydney who has much lower Se). He THRIVED under the high pressure of expo- it gave him an immediate sensory thrill he seeks out, and he is damn good at it too. His high Se demonstrates how he is naturally a better leader in the expo high pressure situations even over Carmy and Sydney who both have Te aux- when it comes down to it, when he is healthy and can keep his Se and Fi in check, he’s naturally better at leading the expo as well as humans in general than Carmy or Sydney. He always has quick physical responses. At its worst his Se gets him into quick arguments and fights as he is very spontaneous and quick in his reactions, and at best it makes him one of the best on the show at dealing with pressure and quickly changing immediate sensory issues. His Fi aux was still present when he was at his most unhealthy (often manifesting as immediate emotional responses to situations without thinking through consequences), but it becomes even more clear through his arc. Look to S02x07 ‘Forks’. What eventually gets Richie to come around and embrace Carmy sending him to work at that fancy restaurant against his will ultimately comes down to two things: His Se immediately understanding and respecting the thrill of how quickly the kitchen worked. But especially his Fi values coming to the surface as he notices the high level of service to the patrons. Richie also is very quick to express his authentic self and values, even when uncomfortable to others. I see some discourse talking about his nostalgia and how that must tie to Si, but I must respectfully disagree with that analysis. All humans to an extent have nostalgia and a stubbornness to change, especially when paired with grief and trauma. I’ve already more than explained why he leads by Se. His initial resistance to change doesn’t come from Si- it comes from a place of him trying to hold onto his deeply personal values as well as his grief manifesting. Te starts showing more in season 2 as he develops professionally. Once he learns more about formal restaurant systems, he applies them effectively and even comes to appreciate their practical utility. This is his tertiary Te growing. Ni is initially weak (he has a hard time seeing long-term visions and consequences), but even this grows as well as he starts to understand bigger picture concepts.
