Although they might be perceived as having no shame for who they really are and their uniqueness, what leads them to think that they're "unique" in the first place, is precisely a feeling of shame that tells them they're defective. They feel "unique" in that they feel/felt estranged and allienated, especially during childhood. This shame they feel thus turns into envy, a persistent feeling that they're "missing" something, and that this is somehow located in external things, leading them to fixate on dissatisfaction with what they have while simultaneously idealizing what everyone/everything else has, but they don't want to rid themselves of these feelings, because their ego structure reinforces that these feelings are their identity, without which they'd feel completely empty and worthless.
