I agree that he’s an INTP because he reaches his conclusions about Sarah through a logical and analytical process. He analyses and theorises about her... struggling to understand her at his logic can’t always process her emotional decision-making. We need to consider that he is going through a difficult (perhaps the most difficult) chapter of his life in this story, so it is reasonable to suggest that he is more emotional than he normally is throughout these events. His story follows his search for a meaning for his life (and life in general) involving a constant inquiry about the world. He certainly does a lot of thinking about different possible outcomes, yet does not ever really know where he is going with his life or what he is doing. He is an enigma to himself, infinitely strange to himself. He is just feeling his way through and hoping he finally arrives where he is meant to be... and he is clearly distressed by this uncertainty! Finally, at the end of the story he comprehends that the meaning of life is survival. He has at least discovered that marriage is not the purpose for him.
