Bateman is honestly an extremely interesting Ni-driven character if you analyze him thoroughly. He's narcissistic, psychopathic and probably even has dissociative identity disorder, and tries his best to stand out in the consumer-driven yippie culture of New York's businessmen. Everyone in the movie looks the same: young people in formal clothing who strive to reach certain degree of success which is always determined by status and wealth. I believe Bateman finds this irritating, and his violent, psychopathic side is the only thing that keeps him somewhat sane as a compensation for his lack of emotions and understanding of the fact that everyone around him is an NPC who is accustomed to society's hedonistic norms. This is supplemented by the fact that Bateman was mistaken for someone else, only confirming the theory that everyone in the movie is so identical it becomes hard to distinguish them: same suits, same glasses, same hairdressers. Even after his confession of murder at the very end of the movie was a complete failure when Harold claimed to have seen Allen last week, and that he isn't actually dead. That is not true - Allen is very much dead, but every businessman we see is just so similar, Harold simply mistook some random person for Allen without second thoughts. Bateman is a victim of this culture no less. He makes attempts at fitting in with these people by talking about his bland music taste, flexing with minor details of his business cards, prices of possessions and making reservations at top-tier restaurants even if it's not possible. At the very beginning of the movie, before Bateman mentions his name, he first mentions that he lives in an exclusive, highly priced apartment. He literally prioritizes his wealth and status over his own identity, or at least he pretends he does. This man has so much Ni that it doesn't even have to be conveyed throughout dialogue. Bateman is obviously aware of the fact that everyone in NYC doesn't care and leads a pleasure-seeking, indulgent lifestyle. To combat this, he desperately wants to be seen as a killer at some points in the movie to show that he's different by using his tertiary Se. He threatens to literally murder people outright or choke them to death, but nobody will take him seriously due to society's apathy fueled by self-gratification. Nobody notices him running around with a chainsaw in his apartment, nor do people care that he's running around on the streets, killing cops, janitors, receptionists and blowing things up. Even while he was carrying Allen's dead body in a bag, nobody noticed that it was literally dripping with blood, instead he got asked where he bought that bag. Peak consumerism, if you ask me. Shoving his eccentric mental illnesses aside, Patrick Bateman may just be one of the most normal characters in the whole movie. Besides Jean of course, who was the only person to actually realize how unstable and psychopathic he really is.
