INFP: Dominant Introverted Feeling – a self-knowledge and a desire to live in accordance with one’s personal values: Charlotte is very emotional but keeps most of that locked inside herself; she suffers through the anguish of thinking she is pregnant alone and even when she tries to talk to her mother about it, she can’t and winds up sitting there in silence. When her mother asks her how she feels about Joe leaving town, Charlotte shrugs and says “Okay.” She has no trouble going against the crowd, and insisting on wearing a pair of ugly boots because her father gave them to her or they remind her of him, despite everyone else having nice shoes. Auxiliary Extroverted Intuition – an idealistic nature devoted to interpreting what inspires personal meaning: Her Ne/Si shows up in how imaginative she is, and how greatly she tries to mold herself to fit into an alternative lifestyle; she is obsessed with Catholics and builds a whole self-story around martyrs and divine impregnation and has no grip on reality and knows nothing about how babies are made (she thinks one kiss has gotten her pregnant, that the Lord is first punishing her for her transgressions and then that she has been divinely appointed to carry the next messiah). Later, Charlotte becomes obsessed with Greek mythology instead, showing her tendency to shift back and forth between abstract interests. Tertiary Introverted Sensing – a preference for a lack of change and attention to select details: She also hates it that she’s forced to move around all the time, because she wants somewhere solid and familiar, to feel at home, and to know things about her dad and to feel connected to him. Charlotte likes to have a routine, and is oblivious to her physical environment much of the time; she gets wrapped up in having sex and is shocked to discover that it’s something “real” (this is “really happening?!”) and neglects her sister, who almost drowns. Inferior Extroverted Thinking – blunt and irritated by incompetence when under stress or overly focused on “the facts”: She also shifts into low Te behaviors under stress—she becomes angry, accusatory, and blunt, calling her mother the town slut and pointing out that what people say about her doesn’t matter, because they “always talk, it’s just usually about you, Mom.” 9w1: Enneagram 9 – desires freedom from others’ influences, by going along with them and being tolerant, until it matters not to: Charlotte is nothing if not a dreamer, who is always torn between a polarized point of view – her own lust after Joe and her desire to be holy and good and pure, and not to feel that way, and to punish herself for having normal sexual thoughts (she tries praying and starving herself, until she passes out). She resents her mother constantly moving them around and never knowing her dad, and dreams about reuniting with him one day, but finds it hard to stand up for herself and challenge her mother until after her little sister almost dies in an accident; this forces them to let out all of their angry feelings for one another, get into a screaming match, and then reconcile. Charlotte usually handles problems herself, but often through avoidance—she runs away from a lot of her shame and problems, tells lies to craft an ideal version of reality, and refuses to discuss her deeper fears. Under stress, she becomes convinced she’s pregnant from a kiss and goes to a medical doctor for his expertise, only to find out she is still a virgin (whew!). 1 wing brings in a desire for moral rightness and perfection: She is critical of her mother’s sexual behaviors and many affairs with married men, but also critical of herself, her natural urges… and yet willing to compromise them. She idolizes nuns for a long time, seeing them as the embodiment of goodness and virtue, and feels as if she is not good enough in general. (FunkyMBTI)
