► "In 1802, after a disagreement with Czar Alexander I, Kutuzov retired to his private estate." ► "He defeated French forces at Ulm on 17 October 1805, but this was before Napoleon’s main army could arrive, and Kutusov realized that he had to withdraw to avoid being cut down by the superior French forces." ► "In 1812, Kutuzov was named to succeed Prince Mikhail Barclay de Tolly as commander of all Russian forces in Europe. He immediately left the war against Turkey and returned north to aid the resistance to the invasion. It was during this period that he utilized his scheme of delaying withdrawals, forcing the French to fight a series of minor battles that wore them down." ► "He was well-informed in theology, philosophy, law, and social sciences." ► "He visited Berlin and discussed tactics with Frederick the Great." ► "He studied in London the attrition warfare of the American colonies against the United Kingdom." ► "The English General enforcing these considerations was told by the Marshal, "I don't care for your objections. I prefer giving my enemy a 'pont d'or,' as you call it, to receiving a 'coup de collier:' besides, I will say again, as I have told you before, that I am by no means sure that the total destruction of the Emperor Napoleon and his army would be such a benefit to the world; his succession would not fall to Russia or any other continental power, but to that which already commands the sea, and whose domination would then be intolerable.""
Biografia
Prince Mikhail Illarionovich Golenishchev-Kutuzov (16 September [O.S. 5 September] 1745 – 28 April [O.S. 16 April] 1813) was a Field Marshal of the Russian Empire. He served as one of the finest military officers and diplomats of Russia under the reign of three Romanov Tsars: Catherine II, Paul I and Alexander I. His military career was closely associated with the rising period of Russia from the end of the 18th century to the beginning of the 19th century. Kutuzov is considered to have been one of the best Russian generals. After Kutuzov became Governor-General of Crimea in 1787, the Russo-Turkish War of 1787–1792 began. Kutuzov was on good terms with Tsar Paul, but had disputes with his successor Tsar Alexander. In 1805, he led Russian forces alongside Austria during the Napoleonic Wars. The allied Russo-Austrian army was defeated by Napoleon at the Battle of Austerlitz. Tolstoy.
