I guess if atheists were amoral, empty or without a purpose, most of my county’s very large population would have no morals or convictions, which is obviously not true. The mainland China population (along with HK) are largely agnostic atheist, half being convinced atheist and more than 3/4 unaffiliated or irreligious. In my personal experience the percentage is even higher. I've only met one Catholic, 1-2 Buddhists and less than 5 Muslims, and other individuals that I've met are all unaffiliated. The overwhelming secularism in China can be attributed to both political and historical factors, since 1)CCP is officially atheist 2)historically Confucianism strongly promotes secularism, prioritizing human affairs over spirituality. While we have societal problems, a lot of them imo, they're largely not due to the lack of religion. Most Chinese atheists, many being apolitical working adults or seniors, don't even think about religion or irreligion that much and are just living their lives. I do think there's a problem with the atheist state disrespecting religious people, but that's more about politics than atheism. It's not like my political views are being respected here anyways.
