He’s a total covert narcissist, he’s a very real “shy nice guy” male manipulator. You like him and empathize with him at the start until you realize yeah he was a little sad his cat died, but not destroyed, yet he milked it for attention. Nikki learned this and used it to gain sympathy from him actually with her dad having cancer because this was HIS idea of what made people like you, milking pity from death. He persisted being with Nikki after the cat sandwich and cat memorial, showing the death of the cat meant less than this fake love he had with Nikki. The cat’s death wasn’t really so deep to him as he made it out to be earlier in the movie. He is the bad guy, he’s selfish, and persists on one sided love over the sanity of Nikki. The film really makes you relate to him in the beginning to gain a sense of relatability then uses that to make you personally feel deeply disturbed with his situation. It’s genuinely such a greatly written plot, it’s as if Curry deep studied human psychology and fear before making it. It does tell a great lesson too.
