Over the course of 2,000+ episodes, Doi’s personality fluctuates. Though viewing him as a whole, I believe that he is an ESFJ! That being said, if someone argued ENFJ I could see myself swinging to that side. [Spoilers about Doi’s past and Movie 3 under the cut] Dominant Fe: His Fe is obvious and that is why I can only consider him as an ESFJ or ENFJ. The charm of Doi’s character is his kindness and big heart. His Fe dom is so evident that people say that he is not suited to be a ninja. He doesn’t even use proper weapons to fight! During Movie 3, Doi wields a sword and it’s the first time blood is shown on screen. He purposefully opts for stationery because he doesn’t want to harm Sonnamon. In addition, Yamada-sensei’s wife spotted his potential to become a teacher because of his caring nature with little Rikichi. He adopted Kirimaru, cared & fed him, and treats him such as a son/younger brother. His character profile on the official NHK site revolves around his occupation as a teacher and his relationships with the people in his life. Seeing the bad grades of the 1 Ha-class causes him physical stomach pain because he cares about them that much (but you can argue he’s just really frustrated haha). All in all, Doi has so much love that the author headcanons that he will open an orphanage after the 1 Ha-class graduates. To Kirimaru, Rikichi, and the students, Doi-sensei is a hero who acts with infinite kindness and empathy. He understands others better than he understands himself and is incredibly in tune to other people’s feelings. Auxiliary Si: Where does his Fe come from? A central part of Doi’s character is his mysterious past. It quite literally defines his actions and personality to this day. He adopts Kirimaru, opens an orphanage, donates the provisions in Movie 3 to the orphans and the poor all because of his shared history as an orphan himself. The 12th musical is about Doi’s dark past before he met the Yamada family. One of Doi’s motivations for becoming a teacher and his kindness in the present is wanting to atone for his past as a killer. He feels greatly indebted to the Yamada family and considers them as his saviours. There are two different canon interpretations of Doi’s past— 1) After his family was murdered, he studied at a temple to learn the ways of becoming a ninja. When he failed a mission, that led him to be chased by his ninja group to which he met the Yamadas OR 2) he was adopted by the ninja family that murdered his family, then deserted the group to which he met the Yamadas. Either interpretation leads to a large theme about his character: Doi-sensei is a man who is attempting to run away from his dark past and is moving forward to a bright future. You can make the argument that a large part of recalling the past is trauma instead of Si, but I disagree as he does just randomly remember vivid memories out of nostalgia. In the 32-64, Doi remembers his first day as a teacher and just sits there for 5 minutes— sitting in nostalgia and laughing while the 1 ha-class stares at him in concern. Many of Doi’s episodes center around his connection with the past! As for Doi’s Tertiary Ne & Inferior Ti, he uses these functions less so it’s harder for me to pin point them. But I think there’s a reason why they’re more inferior than his Fe and Si. Doi is someone who seems comfortable in his daily routine and is more traditional. As for his inferior Ti, he rarely immediately jumps into action and prefers to take things into consideration. I will include some considerations of him as an ENFJ in the comment section!
