Okay, so given that this guy is relegated to haunting the narrative with no appearance in the flesh to analyze, we'll have to do this by process of elimination on secondhand descriptions- but first, let me list off some things we DO know about Casey: 1) He's the kind of person that you could reasonably expect to hop a train and leave Possum Springs, as all of his closest friends collectively assumed that he did so as an explanation for his disappearance. 2) He is not someone who is known to stay in touch. Drawing from the above, none of his friends get suspicious even when it's been months since he's contacted them- this is despite the fact that his parents have no clue about his whereabouts and are accordingly, worried sick. 3) He used to do crimes with Mae and Gregg, played the drums in their band with Angus, and he was also a skater. These all appear to be recreational activities that he freely chose to engage in. So, i think we can knock out all the judging types right off the bat. He has no apparent inclination to gain closure or give closure, but he also lacks the maintenance of social harmony that defines an FJ and the long-term ambition that defines a TJ. He is also certainly not SJ, judging by the opinions that the cult espouses about him- he is distinctively not the kind of person who upholds tradition, but instead *naturally threatens it.* This last bit is for me, what really tips the scales towards him being an introverted judging dom- they are known for marching to the beat of their own drum, and are the exact kind of people who could easily get on a cult's bad side just by existing in their vicinity, AND who might go unmissed if they vanished (of this i am certain)- this fits well with the natural independence and social reclusion that his friends seem to expect of him, so it's safe to say that he's probably an IxxP. This gives us four types he is likely to be, but can we narrow it down further? Well... Allow me to remind you of point 3 that i raised- these are a triad of details about him that may seem disconnected at first glance, but... Now, what do these three activities have in common? They all require you to be tuned into the immediate concrete world around you to pull off successfully. Casey had a delinquent reputation, but never spent a night in jail for the havoc he wreaked- he was also apparently good enough at playing the drums that it didn't cause the band to break up (which is more than can be said for more than a few garage band drummers). While we don't ever hear anything that clues us in to his competence on a skateboard one can assume it was an activity that he found engaging, and maybe he even preferred it as a mode of short-distance transport- All of these are things that point to him having high Se. As a matter of fact, it would come naturally to an ISxP to pursue these activities as they entered adolescence, and with that in mind his teenage rebellion may be best understood as an expression of aux Se overindulgence... So that leaves ISTP and ISFP. But surely, it's too hard to tell whether he's a feeler or a thinker...? Perhaps not. Let's take a look at some of the first text we ever see in NiTW- the opening poem, particularly in its very first branching pathway. Here's the relevant excerpt: "In the year Granddad died we had the worst flood since 1998 Gregg got trapped on top of a dog house the power was out for two days Casey Hartley came by in his dad's boat And I laughed when i saw him" We aren't given much context for this moment, though we can assume Mae is the one writing. That being said... A flood is a challenge that a boat has been the most natural answer to since time immemorial (i mean shit, even the old testament would agree). That he did this at all demonstrates that he is adaptable in the face of a crisis and can come up with practical solutions to problems on the fly, which somewhat points to ISTP over ISFP, but to be sure... Here are some more clues that point away from Fi dom: - No one ever mentions him holding deep personal convictions or beliefs, despite him being at odds with the status quo - Similarly, no one ever recounts him expressing intense emotions or a sense of moral righteousness - He is not mentioned to be moody or brooding in nature despite his introversion (common for male Fi doms) - He's not much of a creative, nor did he seem all that concerned with self-expression specifically - His friends didn't expect him to say goodbye or reassure them before hopping a train (much more aligned with inferior Fe, as dom Fi might find that fucked up) - They also didn't expect him to check in via IM if he had indeed left town- He in fact seems to lack the people-orientation that ISFPs tend to have altogether. We never got to meet Casey Hartley- but from the sounds of it, he was a pretty typical small-town teenage ISTP (believe me, i know the type). I think he could've made it if he'd ever gotten the chance to... May his memory be a blessing.
